Overview
EN 12629-1:2000/FprA1 is a European standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). It specifies the common safety requirements for machines used in the manufacture of constructional products from concrete and calcium-silicate. As the foundational part of a multi-part series, this standard addresses hazards that may arise during the operation and maintenance of such machinery, supporting compliance with essential requirements of EU Directives like 98/37/EC (Machinery Directive) and 2006/42/EC.
This standard establishes a systematic approach to risk mitigation, ensuring machines are designed, constructed, and maintained to minimize safety hazards in industrial contexts.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Covers machines used to manufacture constructional products with concrete and calcium-silicate.
- Applies to machines within the series EN 12629-2 to EN 12629-8 in addition to its common requirements.
- Does not apply to machinery manufactured before the standard’s publication date.
Core Safety Requirements
- Alignment with EN ISO 12100 for risk assessment and safety principles.
- Requirements for safeguarding, including fixed and interlocked guards and sensitive protective equipment.
- Measures for machine operation, maintenance, and misuse that are reasonably foreseeable.
Ergonomics and Human Factors
- References to standards for ergonomic design, including access openings, control devices, display systems, and operation zones (EN 547, EN 894, EN ISO 14122 series).
- Addresses safety distances, operator protection, and noise reduction.
Verification and Information
- Methods for verification of safety measures, including visual inspection, measurement, and system performance tests.
- Requirements for information for use: operating instructions, noise emission data, and marking.
Compliance and Directives
- Provides pathways to compliance with EU Machinery Directives.
- Integral annexes (ZA and ZB) clarify relationships with essential legislative requirements.
Applications
EN 12629-1:2000/FprA1 is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and operators of construction equipment and machinery used to produce:
- Concrete blocks, paving stones, kerb units
- Precast concrete elements
- Calcium-silicate products
- Concrete roof tiles, pipes, and reinforced elements
Practical uses include:
- Machine design: Ensuring new machines meet the latest European safety requirements.
- Procurement: Assisting specifiers and buyers in selecting compliant equipment.
- Risk assessment: Providing benchmarks for hazard identification, assessment, and mitigation.
- Training and safety documentation: Informing operational procedures and maintenance guides.
- Regulatory compliance: Demonstrating conformity for CE marking and market access in the EU and EFTA regions.
Related Standards
The EN 12629 series encompasses specific machinery and processes:
- EN 12629-2 to -8: Requirements for machines such as block making, pipes, roof tile, precast reinforced products, and long-line manufacture.
- Referenced standards for safety and ergonomics:
- EN ISO 12100 (Safety of machinery - Basic concepts, general principles for design)
- EN 349 (Minimum gaps to avoid crushing)
- EN ISO 13857 (Safety distances)
