Overview

EN 4693:2017 - "Aerospace series - Tie rod with integrated bolts - Assembly code A, B and C" is a CEN / ASD‑STAN European Standard that defines the dimensions, tolerances, materials and assembly requirements for adjustable tie rod assemblies used in aerospace interior and sub‑structure applications. It covers rod assemblies with two adjustable ends with integrated bolts, intended for service in the temperature range −55 °C to 85 °C. The standard ensures compatibility, interchangeability and traceability of tie rods across suppliers and operators.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & configuration: Defines three assembly codes (A, B, C) with standard configurations shown in figures; includes a specified bolt diameter (d = 20 mm) and an adjustable length range (L = ±12.7 mm).
  • Dimensions & tolerances: Dimensions in millimetres; general tolerances per ISO 2768‑mK. Missing dimensions can be treated as manufacturing options.
  • Materials & surface treatments: Material codes A and B specify combinations such as aluminium alloy (WL 3.1354), stainless steel (WL 1.4548), titanium (3.7165), PPS inserts and silicon rubber washers. Surface treatments and anodizing follow referenced aerospace treatment codes.
  • Locking clips and safety: Locking clips per EN 4692; clip types A and B described - Type A prevents rotation, Type B also transmits tension/compression loads and is available in RH/LH versions.
  • Fork and eye ends: Detailed dimensions, thread forms and spanner flats for fork and eye end variants; figures and tables provide size codes and assembly details.
  • Mass calculation & marking: Tables for component masses (fork/eye ends) and rules for mass calculation; marking requirements reference EN 2424.
  • Normative references & compatibility: Links to related specifications such as EN 4691‑1 (technical spec), EN 4692, EN 4614 (bearings), ISO 8075 (surface treatment) and material delivery standards.

Practical applications

  • Used for design, procurement and manufacture of adjustable aerospace tie rods for cabin interiors, furnishings, avionics sub‑structures and other secondary airframe systems.
  • Ensures interchangeable components across suppliers and maintenance operations, simplifying spare parts management and retrofit work.
  • Supports compliance with environmental and safety conditions typical of aircraft service (temperature extremes, specified surface finishes and materials).

Who should use this standard

  • Aerospace component designers and structural engineers
  • OEMs and Tier 1/2 suppliers manufacturing tie rods and end fittings
  • Quality, procurement and certification teams verifying part conformity
  • Maintenance organizations and MROs specifying replacement parts

Related standards and notes

  • Normative references: EN 4691‑1, EN 4692, EN 4614, EN 2424, ISO 2768, ISO 8075
  • Published by CEN and prepared by ASD‑STAN; patent claims are noted in the document (holders listed), so users should consider patent/licensing aspects when applying the standard.
