Overview

EN 1522:1998 is an important European standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements and classification system for bullet resistance in windows, doors, shutters, and blinds. The standard ensures these building components, together with their frames and infills, provide verified protection against attacks from handguns, rifles, and shotguns. EN 1522:1998 is applicable for both internal and external installations in buildings where bullet-resistant solutions are necessary for safety and security.

Comprehensive testing is performed in accordance with prEN 1523, covering a range of ballistic threats. The standard also stipulates that shutters and blinds must be tested separately (not in combination with windows or doors), ensuring accurate classification of bullet-resistant performance.

Key Topics

  • Product Scope: Applies to windows, doors, shutters, and blinds, including frames and infill panels, intended for bullet-resistant protection.
  • Application Environments: Suitable for both internal and external use within a wide range of buildings.
  • Testing Procedures: Specifies testing in accordance with prEN 1523 to evaluate bullet resistance.
  • Classification System: Establishes clear bullet-resistance classes based on the type of firearm and the ammunition used in testing.
  • Component Testing: Requires shutters and blinds to undergo standalone testing for individual classification.
  • Security Enhancement: Contributes to building security, particularly for sensitive or high-risk locations.

Applications

EN 1522:1998 is widely used in various sectors where bullet-resistant construction elements are critical for occupant safety and property protection. Practical applications include:

  • Government Buildings: Protection for public offices, embassies, and courthouses.
  • Financial Institutions: Enhanced security for banks, cash handling centers, and safe rooms.
  • Commercial Properties: High-risk retail environments such as jewelry stores or pharmacies.
  • Residential Security: Private homes requiring elevated protection due to personal risk.
  • Critical Infrastructure: Utility control centers, data centers, and transport hubs.
  • Correctional Facilities: Secure cells and observation areas requiring bullet-resistant barriers.

Employing components that comply with EN 1522:1998 helps ensure compliance with legal and insurance requirements for security. The standard also provides specifiers, architects, manufacturers, and property owners with a reliable framework for selecting appropriately classified bullet-resistant windows, doors, shutters, and blinds.

Related Standards

For comprehensive risk management and compliance, EN 1522:1998 is often referenced alongside related standards, including:

  • EN 1523 - Test methods for bullet resistance of building components (complementary testing procedures).
  • EN 1063 - Glass in building - Security glazing - Testing and classification of resistance against bullet attack.
  • ISO 16935 - Glass in building - Security glazing - Testing and classification of resistance against bullet attack (international context).
  • EN 1627 - Pedestrian doorsets, windows, and partitions - Burglar resistance - Requirements and classification.

Summary

EN 1522:1998 bullet resistance requirements offer a trusted, standardized approach to safeguarding building openings. By adhering to this standard, organizations and individuals can ensure windows, doors, shutters, and blinds provide effective protection against firearm threats, supporting broader building security strategies and regulatory compliance.
