Overview
EN 2702:2005 is a CEN/AECMA aerospace material standard that specifies requirements for Aluminium alloy AL-P6061 in the T6 or T62 tempers. It applies to drawn or extruded bar and section forms with dimensions a or D ≤ 200 mm, intended for aerospace applications. The standard is part of the EN metallic materials series and is prepared in accordance with EN 4500-2 and the general organization described in EN 4258.
EN 2702:2005 sets out delivery conditions, required mechanical characteristics and references to technical specification EN 4400-3 for bar and section products. It ensures consistent material properties, production control and inspection practices important to aircraft manufacturers and suppliers.
Key Topics
- Material designation: AL-P6061 with specified chemical composition ranges (Si, Fe, Cu, Mn, Mg, Cr, Zn, Ti, Al) as referenced in the standard.
- Tempers and delivery conditions: T6 and T62 are covered; delivery condition codes and heat treatment routes are specified (see EN 4400-3 for detailed technical specification).
- Forms and production: Applies to drawn or extruded bars and sections (a or D ≤ 200 mm).
- Mechanical requirements: Minimum characteristic values are given in the standard, including proof stress (Rp0.2 ≥ 245 MPa), tensile strength (Rm ≥ 270 MPa) and elongation (A ≥ 10 % for 50 mm gauge).
- Testing and inspection: Test sample rules, dimensional and marking inspections, and limits on external/internal defects are referenced to EN 4400-3.
- Qualification: Product qualification and a qualification programme are to be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser, per EN 4400-3.
Applications
EN 2702:2005 is targeted at aerospace component manufacturers, material suppliers and procurement teams who require certified aluminium wrought products for structural or secondary aircraft parts. Typical practical values of adopting this standard include:
- Assured mechanical performance for structural design and assembly.
- Consistent heat treatment and temper control to achieve repeatable properties across production batches.
- Clear inspection and acceptance criteria that facilitate supplier qualification and traceability.
Use cases include structural bars, machined components from extruded profiles, and other aerospace parts where AL-P6061 in T6 or T62 condition is appropriate and where the cross-section or diameter does not exceed 200 mm.
Related Standards
- EN 4400-3 - Aerospace series: Aluminium and aluminium alloy wrought products - Technical specification: Part 3: Bar and section (normative reference for tests and specifications).
- EN 4258 - General organization of standardization for aerospace metallic materials.
- EN 4500-2 - Rules for drafting and presentation of metallic material standards (specific rules for aluminium alloys).
For procurement and technical implementation, users should consult EN 4400-3 and the referenced EN documents to apply the full set of material, testing and inspection requirements mandated by EN 2702:2005.
