Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a
vote.
International Standard IS0 3166 was first published in 1974. It was prepared
by Technical Committee lSO/TC 46, Information and documentation, in
collaboration with the following International Organizations: Customs
Cooperation Council (CCC), [since 1995: World Customs Organization
(WCO)], United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA), International Air Transport Association (IATA),
International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), International Chamber of
Shipping (ICS), International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA),
International Labour Office (ILO), International Telecommunication Union
(ITU), International Union of Railways (UIC), United Nations Organization
(UN), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD),
Universal Postal Union (UPU), World Intellectual Property Organization
(WIPO), and World Health Organization (WHO).
This edition is a complete revision of IS0 3166 and cancels and replaces the
fourth edition (IS0 3166:1993). It comprises a consolidation of all changes
to the !ists of IS0 3166:1993 agreed to by the IS0 3166 Maintenance Agency
(see below), published in the IS0 3166 Newsletter up to IV-2.

IS0 3166 consists of the following parts, under the general title Codes for
the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions:
Part I: Country codes

Annex A forms an integral part of this part of IS0 3166. Annexes B, C and D
are for information only.

Avant-propos
L’ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une federation
mondiale d’organismes nationaux de normalisation (comites membres de
I’ISO). L’elaboration des Normes internationales est en general confide aux
comites techniques de I’ISO. Chaque comite membre interesse par une
etude a le droit de faire partie du comite technique tree 5 cet effet. Les
organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non gouvernementales,
en liaison avec I’ISO participent egalement aux travaux. L’ISO collabore
etroitement avec la Commission electrotechnique internationale (CEI) en ce
qui concerne la normalisation electrotechnique.
Les projets de Normes internationales adopt& par les comites techniques
sont soumis aux comites membres pour vote. Leur publication comme
Normes internationales requiert I’approbation de 75 % au moins des
comites membres votants.
La Norme internationale IS0 3166 a ete publiee pour la premiere fois en
1974. Elle a ete elaboree par le comite technique lSO/TC 46, Information et
documentation, avec la collaboration des Organisations internationales
suivantes: Bureau international du travail (BIT), Conseil de cooperation
douaniere (CCD) [depuis 1995, Organisation mondiale des douanes (OMD)],
Chambre de commerce internationale (Ccl), Comite economique pour

internationale de la marine marchande (ICS), Organisation mondiale de la
propriete intellectuelle (OMPI), Organisation mondiale de la Sante (OMS),
Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU), Conference des Nations Unies sur
le commerce et le developpement (UNCTAD), Union internationale des
chemins de fer (UIC), Union internationale des telecommunications (UIT),
Union postale universelle (UPU).
Cette Edition est une revision complete de I’ISO 3166. Elle annule et
remplace la quatrieme edition (IS0 3166:1993). Elle comprend un
regroupement de tous les changements par rapport aux listes de
I’ISO 3166:1993 accept& par I’Agence de mise a jour de I’ISO 3166 (voir ci-
dessous), publies dans le bulletin /SO 3766 Info-Services jusqu’a IV-2.
