(Main)Durability of wood and wood-based products - Efficacy of preventive wood preservatives as determined by biological tests - Part 2: Labelling
Durability of wood and wood-based products - Efficacy of preventive wood preservatives as determined by biological tests - Part 2: Labelling
This European Standard specifies the requirements for labelling wood preservative products according to their efficacy and suitability for use, for each of the five use classes defined in EN 335.
This European Standard is applicable to all wood preservative products supplied for application in liquid form for the preventive treatment of timbers (structural and non-structural) against wood-attacking fungi, wood-attacking insects and marine organisms as described in EN 1001-2 and EN 335. It is applicable to products for preventive treatments against fungi causing disfigurement (blue stain) of wood in service, only if this forms part of the overall preventive effectiveness of the product.
This European Standard is not applicable to wood preservative products supplied for application as pastes, solids or in capsule form because they cannot be tested without modification of the biological tests demanded in this standard. It does not apply either to wood preservative products for remedial (curative) treatments or to those applied to prevent fungi causing sap stain on green (unseasoned) timber.
Odpornost lesa in lesnih proizvodov - Učinkovitost biocidnih proizvodov za preventivno zaščito lesa, določena z biološkimi preskusi - 2. del: Označevanje

Overview
EN 599-2:2016 - "Durability of wood and wood-based products - Efficacy of preventive wood preservatives as determined by biological tests - Part 2: Labelling" (CEN) defines the labelling requirements for preventive wood preservative products based on their tested efficacy and suitability for use classes defined in EN 335. The standard applies to liquid-form preservatives for preventive treatment of structural and non‑structural timbers against wood‑attacking fungi, insects and marine organisms. It is not applicable to pastes, solids, capsules, remedial (curative) treatments or products for sap‑stain prevention on green timber.
Key topics and requirements
- Mandatory label information (must be on the container or accompany the product):
- Product name (trade name)
- Use class(es) (as per EN 335) for which efficacy has been demonstrated
- Application process(es) - whether superficial (brush, spray, dipping, etc.) or penetrating (vacuum/pressure, double vacuum, etc.)
- Type(s) of wood suitable (softwood, hardwood or both)
- Target organisms tested and effective against (e.g., brown/white rot fungi, soft rot, blue stain in service, Hylotrupes bajulus, Lyctus brunneus, Anobium punctatum, termites, marine organisms)
- Application rate/retention - calculated in accordance with EN 351‑1 from the critical values in EN 599‑1; expressed as g/m2 for superficial treatments and kg/m3 (retention) for penetrating treatments
- Testing linkage: Labelling claims must be supported by biological efficacy tests carried out according to EN 599‑1.
- Presentation guidance: Annex A gives an example label format (e.g., Use class UC2; UC3, application methods and example application rates).
- Regulatory note: Labels must include any additional information required by European or national laws.
