Overview
EN 2713-004:2006 is a CEN aerospace product standard that defines screened (braided) and jacketed, ink-jet printable single and multicore electrical cables for on-board aircraft electrical systems. It covers cables rated for operating temperatures between −55 °C and 200 °C, including requirements for materials, construction, marking and performance verification. The standard also allows hot-stamp marking and requires markings to comply with EN 3838. (Note: the scope text states “This standard is not valid for new study.”)
Keywords: EN 2713-004:2006, aerospace cables, screened braided jacketed cables, ink jet printable, aircraft electrical systems, polyimide jacket.
Key topics and requirements
- Temperature range: Designed for continuous use from −55 °C up to 200 °C; specific endurance testing includes 40 000 h at 200 °C.
- Cable types: Single-core and 1–4 multicore constructions. 2–4 core cables are spiral screened and twisted together; filler cores are not allowed.
- Screening:Nickel-plated copper stranded braid (strand dimensions per the standard and EN 2083/EN 3475-100 tests).
- Outer jacket and coating: Polyimide jacket with nominal total wall thickness 30 µm, coated both sides with 2.5 µm fluorocarbon; a dispersion fluorocarbon top coat (≥15 µm) including additives to accept ink-jet marking.
- Marking: Ink-jet printable and hot-stamp options; markings must meet EN 3838 requirements for user-applied cable identification.
- Performance & test regime: Uses test methods in EN 3475-100 (visual, dimensions, ohmic resistance, voltage proof, insulation resistance, surface resistance), plus accelerated ageing (250 ±5 °C), thermal shock, cold-bend, bending, flammability (extinguishing time ≤ 3 s), notch propagation (40 µm), scrape abrasion and other aerospace-specific tests.
- Designation & identification: Example identity format: EN2713-004B002F (standard number + core count code + conductor size code + colour code).
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Aerospace cable manufacturers, electrical harness designers, aircraft OEMs, maintenance/repair organizations, procurement and certification teams.
- Typical applications: On-board wiring for avionics, sensors, control circuits and general-purpose aircraft electrical systems where high-temperature resistance, braided screening and traceable ink-jet marking are required.
- Practical value: Ensures material compatibility (polyimide/fluorocarbon top coats), electromagnetic screening, long-term thermal stability and standardized marking for traceability and maintenance.
