Overview
ASTM F1074-87(2023): Standard Specification for Cleats, Welded Horn Type establishes the requirements for hollow, welded horn-type cleats and pads specifically designed for marine applications. Developed by ASTM International, this standard addresses the needs of commercial and navy vessels where the securement of boat-handling lines is critical. ASTM F1074 covers material composition, dimensional specifications, manufacture, testing, packaging, and product marking of marine cleats to ensure durability, safety, and reliable performance in marine environments.
Key Topics
Material Requirements
- Horn cleats are manufactured from galvanized steel, grade 1023W, following ASTM Practice A385 for high-quality zinc coatings.
- Base plates employ carbon steel with a maximum 0.35% carbon content, in line with ASTM Specification A36/A36M.
- All chafing surfaces on the cleats require a 125µ finish for optimal protection of ropes and increased longevity.
Manufacture and Design
- Horns are made of cast steel, round in shape, meticulously ground to be free of burrs and sharp edges.
- Welding of horns to base plates must produce smooth joints to prevent chafing.
- Base plates are oval with smoothly rounded edges.
Dimensions and Testing
- The standard specifies cleat dimensions, compatible rope sizes, and corresponding test loads.
- Test methods use ASTM A370 to verify mechanical performance and safety.
- Supplementary quality assurance provisions allow purchasers to inspect both processes and finished products at the manufacturing facility.
Packaging and Marking
- Cleats must be packaged to prevent damage during transit and handling.
- Product containers are stenciled with ASTM designation, manufacturer details, and order information to ensure traceability and compliance.
Applications
Marine cleats built to ASTM F1074-87(2023) are essential for:
- Commercial and Navy Vessels: Providing secure attachment points for boat handling lines on deck, ensuring safe mooring, anchoring, and towing.
- Shipbuilding and Outfitting: Used wherever robust, standardized line-handling hardware is required, from new vessel construction to repairs and retrofitting.
- Boat Yards and Marine Hardware Suppliers: Sourcing and stocking certified welded horn-type cleats for client projects and maintenance operations.
- Compliance and Safety: Ensuring marine hardware adheres to recognized international standards, reducing risk and promoting best practices in maritime operations.
By adhering to this standard, marine equipment manufacturers and users benefit from increased product reliability, simplified procurement, and enhanced operational safety.
Related Standards
Adoption and application of ASTM F1074-87(2023) often require referencing additional standards, including:
- ASTM A36/A36M: Specification for Carbon Structural Steel, covering the base plate material.
- ASTM A370: Test Methods and Definitions for Mechanical Testing of Steel Products, used for validating cleat performance.
- ASTM A385: Practice for Providing High-Quality Zinc Coatings (Hot-Dip), referenced for galvanizing the steel components.
These related standards help ensure the welded horn-type marine cleats meet stringent industry requirements for composition, performance, and corrosion resistance.
