Overview
ASTM A99-03(2019): Standard Specification for Ferromanganese is an internationally recognized specification developed by ASTM International. This standard defines quality, chemical composition, and physical property requirements for ferromanganese used in steelmaking and related alloy industries. Covering ten specific grades, including standard, medium-carbon, nitrided, and low-carbon variants, ASTM A99 ensures materials meet strict criteria for essential elements and impurity limits. The standard also outlines provisions for product sizing, friability, and supplementary requirements, supporting consistent quality in global manufacturing and supply chains.
Key Topics
Grades Covered
- Standard Ferromanganese: Grades A, B, C
- Medium-Carbon Ferromanganese: Grades A, B, C, D, and nitrided
- Low-Carbon Ferromanganese: Grades A, B
Chemical Composition
Products must meet specified ranges or maximums for:- Manganese
- Carbon
- Silicon
- Phosphorus
- Sulfur
- Nitrogen (for nitrided grades)
Supplementary limits are set for arsenic, tin, lead, and chromium to ensure material quality and safety.
Physical Properties
- Materials must be supplied in standard sizes with defined size tolerances.
- Friability ratings are provided, reflecting the degree to which the material may break down during handling and transport.
Documentation and Traceability
- Manufacturers are required to supply analysis certificates for each shipment, confirming compliance with specified chemical requirements.
Applications
Ferromanganese, as covered by ASTM A99, is a vital ferroalloy additive used primarily in the steel industry. Its high manganese content and controlled impurity levels make it essential for:
Steel Production
- Acts as a deoxidizer and desulfurization agent in steelmaking
- Improves the mechanical properties and wear resistance of steel products
- Supports production of low- and medium-carbon steels for various structural and engineering applications
Foundry and Alloy Manufacturing
- Essential in the production of cast iron and special steels
- Used to achieve precise alloy chemistries in specialty applications
Global Supply Chains
- Standardized requirements facilitate international trade and sourcing
- Ensures compatibility and reliable performance across different markets
Related Standards
When referencing ASTM A99 for ferromanganese, consider these related standards to ensure comprehensive compliance and testing:
- ASTM A1025/A1025M: General requirements for ferroalloys and other alloying materials, including supplementary and shipment-specific requirements.
- ASTM E11: Specification for woven wire test sieve cloth and test sieves, used for particle sizing in material grading.
- Other ASTM Ferroalloy and Steel Standards: Consider the specific requirements for alloying additions and base metals relevant to your process.
Adherence to ASTM A99-03(2019) helps ensure that ferromanganese supplied and used in steelmaking reliably meets industry standards for quality, safety, and performance, supporting efficient production, regulatory compliance, and optimized material properties.
