Standard Specification for Non-Reinforced Extruded Tee Connections for Piping Applications
ABSTRACT
This specification covers the pipe materials and dimensions for producing non-reinforced extruded tee connections manufactured by mechanical forming processes. The term “extruded tee connection” applies to butt-weld or socket-weld connections. The non-reinforced extruded pipe tee connection is an alternative to the tee fittings, nozzle, and other welded connections. The non-reinforced extruded pipe tee connection has been widely used for systems in the marine, process piping, food, pharmaceutical, and similar industries. Different materials that have acceptable forming qualities to produce extruded tee connections shall consist of copper, copper-nickel alloy, titanium, steel, and stainless steel. The extruded tee connection shall be free from burrs and cracks, which would affect the suitability for the intended service.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the pipe materials and dimensions for producing non-reinforced extruded tee connections manufactured by mechanical forming processes. The term “extruded tee connection” applies to butt-weld or socket-weld connections. This specification refers to the forming process that leads to welding or brazing.
1.2 The non-reinforced extruded pipe tee connection is an alternative to the tee fittings, nozzle, and other welded connections.
1.3 The non-reinforced extruded pipe tee connection has been widely used for systems in the marine, process piping, food, pharmaceutical, and similar industries.
1.4 The extruded tee connection will be welded in accordance with Specification F722. Brazing of tee connections will be in accordance with ASME B31.5.
1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to inch-pound units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.

Overview
ASTM F2014-00(2019) is the standardized specification for non-reinforced extruded tee connections used in piping applications. Published by ASTM International, this document provides requirements for the materials, dimensions, and acceptable manufacturing processes-specifically mechanical forming-for extruded tee connections. Unlike traditional preformed tee fittings or welded nozzles, non-reinforced extruded tees are formed directly from the run pipe, resulting in an integral, high-integrity connection. This standard is applicable to both butt-weld and socket-weld connections, providing industry guidance for safe and reliable fabrication practices across several critical sectors including marine, process piping, food, and pharmaceutical industries.
Key Topics
- Specification Scope: Covers pipe materials and dimensional requirements for manufacturing non-reinforced extruded tee connections by mechanical forming.
- Materials: Acceptable materials include copper, copper-nickel alloys, titanium, steel, and stainless steel-each with documented forming qualities.
- Connection Types: Applies to both butt-weld and socket-weld extruded tee connections, which are subsequently welded (per ASTM F722) or brazed (per ASME B31.5).
- Dimensions & Tolerances: Requires that finished extruded tee connections conform to the tolerances of the mating pipes, referencing applicable standards like ASME B36.10M and ISO 4200.
- Surface Quality: Specifies that extruded tees must be free from cracks, burrs, or discontinuities that could compromise service performance.
- Sizing Guidance: Provides a matrix for sizes and wall thicknesses for tee connections manufactured from the main pipe, supporting a wide range of design and application needs.
Applications
ASTM F2014-00(2019) is tailored for use in several industries where durable, leak-resistant piping systems are essential:
- Marine Systems: Utilized for shipboard piping, where mechanical forming results in strong, reliable branch connections with reduced welding.
- Process Piping: Benefits chemical, oil and gas, and industrial facilities by offering a robust alternative to traditional welded tees and nozzles.
- Food and Pharmaceutical: Supports sanitary piping systems by enabling tee connections compatible with hygiene-critical processes.
- HVAC and Refrigeration: Finds application in refrigeration piping and heat transfer systems, where precision and toughness are paramount.
- General Construction: Useful wherever piping networks require branch connections offering integrity and consistent material characteristics.
Related Standards
Several other ASTM and international standards are referenced or relevant to the correct usage of ASTM F2014-00(2019):
- ASTM F722: Specification for welded joints for shipboard piping systems.
- ASME B31.1, B31.3, B31.5: Codes for power, process, and refrigeration piping, respectively-defining allowable stresses, welding, and brazing requirements.
- ASTM B88, B466/B466M, B337, A53/A53M, A312/A312M: Material specifications for various types of copper, copper-nickel, titanium, carbon steel, and stainless steel pipes.
- ISO 4200: International standard listing dimensions for plain end steel tubes, welded and seamless.
- ASME B36.10M: Provides size and wall thickness schedules for welded and seamless wrought steel pipe.
By following ASTM F2014-00(2019), engineers and manufacturers can ensure reliable, consistent quality in the fabrication and installation of extruded tee connections for demanding piping applications. This standard streamlines production, supports regulatory compliance, and helps maintain operational safety across multiple sectors.
