M/386 - Geotextiles
AMENDMENT TO: Mandate M/107 to CEN/CENELEC concerning the execution of standardisation work for Harmonized standards on Geotextiles
Mandate M/386 is an amendment to Mandate M/107 addressed to CEN and CENELEC, focusing on the standardisation of harmonized standards for geotextiles. It confirms the execution of existing European Standards (ENs) and European Prestandards (ENVs) related to geotextiles. The mandate ensures continued development and alignment of standards within the scope of geotextile materials and applications, supporting consistent quality and regulatory compliance across the European market. This amendment follows resolution ECISS/TC 105 4/2013, maintaining the framework for standardisation work under EU directives relevant to geotextiles.
Purpose
This mandate concerns an amendment to a previous standardisation mandate (M/107) directed at CEN and CENELEC. The original mandate involved the development of harmonized standards for geotextiles. The amendment confirms and updates the standardisation work related to the execution of these harmonized standards.
Standardisation request
The request is directed to the European standardisation bodies CEN and CENELEC to continue or update their work on harmonized European standards (ENs/ENVs) for geotextiles. This involves the preparation, confirmation, and possible revision of relevant standards ensuring that geotextiles used within the EU meet agreed quality and safety criteria.
Expected deliverables
The expected deliverables include confirmed or possibly revised harmonised standards (ENs and ENVs) for geotextiles. These standards provide technical specifications and test methods to support compliance with EU legislation and facilitate the free movement of geotextile products in the internal market.
Context
Geotextiles are textile materials used in civil engineering projects such as road construction, erosion control, and soil stabilization. Harmonised standards for these products are essential to ensure they meet safety, performance, and environmental criteria under EU regulations. Mandate M/386 serves to update and confirm the continuation of the standardisation activities under the original mandate M/107, underlining the Commission’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards in the geotextiles sector. The resolution reference ECISS/TC 105 4/2013 relates to the technical committee responsible for these standards.
This mandate covers the standardisation work related to geotextiles, focusing on harmonised standards applicable to geotextile products used in construction and civil engineering sectors.
General Information
This European Standard specifies the relevant characteristics of geotextiles and geotextile-related products used in solid waste disposals, and the appropriate test methods to determine these characteristics.
The intended use of these geotextiles or geotextile-related products is to fulfil one or more of the following functions: filtration, separation, reinforcement and protection. The separation function will always occur in conjunction with filtration or reinforcement, and hence will not be specified alone.
This European Standard is not applicable to geosynthetic barriers, as defined in EN ISO 10318 1.
This European Standard provides for the assessment and verification of constancy of performance of the product to this European Standard and for factory production control procedures.
Particular application cases may contain requirements regarding additional properties and – preferably standardized – test methods, if they are technically relevant.
This European Standard may be used to derive design values by taking into account factors within the context of the definitions given in EN 1997 1 (Eurocode 7), e.g. factors of safety. The design life of the product should be determined, since its function may be temporary, as a construction expediency, or permanent, for the lifetime of the structure.

Frequently Asked Questions
A European Standardization Mandate is a formal request from the European Commission to the European Standardization Organizations (CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI) to develop European standards (ENs) in support of EU legislation and policies. Mandates are issued under Regulation (EU) No 1025/2012 and help ensure that products and services meet the essential requirements set out in EU directives and regulations.
M/386 is a European Standardization Mandate titled "AMENDMENT TO: Mandate M/107 to CEN/CENELEC concerning the execution of standardisation work for Harmonized standards on Geotextiles". AMENDMENT TO: Mandate M/107 to CEN/CENELEC concerning the execution of standardisation work for Harmonized standards on Geotextiles There are 82 standards developed under this mandate.
Standards developed in response to a mandate and cited in the Official Journal of the European Union become "harmonized standards". Products manufactured in compliance with harmonized standards benefit from a presumption of conformity with the essential requirements of the corresponding EU directive or regulation, facilitating CE marking and market access across the European Economic Area.
