This document provides specifications for testing miniaturised metallic test pieces where not enough material is available for test pieces according to ISO 6892-1. The guidelines in this document are not intended to replace the requirements of the standard method described in ISO 6892-1. This document refers to conventionally manufactured materials. NOTE 1 Additional information regarding testing of additively manufactured materials are given in ISO/ASTM 52909[5]. NOTE 2 Further information on the performance of miniaturised test pieces in tensile testing and the comparability of respective results is available in References [8] to [14].

ISO 6892-4:2015 specifies the method of tensile testing of metallic materials in liquid helium (the boiling point is ?269 °C or 4,2 K, designated as 4 K) and defines the mechanical properties that can be determined. This part of ISO 6892 may apply also to tensile testing at cryogenic temperatures (less than ?196 °C or 77 K), which requires special apparatus, smaller test pieces, and concern for serrated yielding, adiabatic heating, and strain-rate effects. To conduct a tensile test according to this part of ISO 6892 at 4 K, the test piece installed in a cryostat is fully submerged in liquid helium (He) and tested using displacement control at a nominal strain rate of 10−3 s−1 or less. NOTE The boiling point of the rare 3He isotope is 3,2 K. Usually, the tests are performed in 4He or a mixture of 3He and 4He with a high concentration of 4He. Therefore, the temperature is, as designated before, 4 K.

Frequently Asked Questions

ISO/TC 164/SC 1/WG 4 is a Subcommittee within the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It is named "Conventional quasi-static tensile test procedures". This committee has published 9 standards.

ISO/TC 164/SC 1/WG 4 develops ISO standards. Currently, there are 9 published standards from this subcommittee.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental international organization that develops and publishes international standards. Founded in 1947 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, ISO brings together experts from 170+ member countries to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based standards that support innovation and provide solutions to global challenges.

A Subcommittee (SC) in ISO operates under a Technical Committee and focuses on a specific subset of the TC's scope. Subcommittees develop standards and technical specifications in their specialized area, reporting to their parent Technical Committee. They may also have working groups for detailed technical work.
