SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This test method is used to measure the apparent viscosity of asphalts at handling, mixing, or application temperatures.
5.2 Some asphalts may exhibit non-Newtonian behavior under the conditions of this test method, or at temperatures within the range of this test method. Since non-Newtonian viscosity values are not absolute properties, but reflect the behavior of the fluid within the particular measurement system, it should be recognized that measurements made by this test method may not always predict field performance under the conditions of use.
5.3 Comparisons between non-Newtonian viscosity values should be made only for measurements made with similar conditions of temperature, shear rate, and shear history.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method outlines a procedure for measuring the apparent viscosity of asphalt from 40 to 260 °C [100 to 500 °F] using a rotational viscometer and a temperature-controlled thermal chamber for maintaining the test temperature.

ABSTRACT
This specification covers three types of asphalt suitable for use as a mopping coat in dampproofing; or as a plying or mopping cement in the construction of membrane waterproofing systems with felts, fabrics, and asphalt-impregnated glass mat. Three types of asphalts have been designated: Type I is a soft, adhesive, “self-healing” asphalt that flows easily under the mop and is suitable for use below grade under uniformly moderate temperature conditions both during the process of installation and during service, Type II is a somewhat less susceptible asphalt than Type I, with good adhesive and “self-healing” properties, suitable for use above grade where it will not be exposed above a certain temperature, and Type III is an asphalt less susceptible to temperature than Type II, with good adhesive properties, and suitable for use above grade on vertical surfaces exposed to direct sunlight or above a certain temperature. The asphalt shall be prepared from crude petroleum by suitable refining processes to conform to the applicable physical requirements for each type. Different tests shall be conducted in order to determine the following physical properties of asphalt: softening point, flash point, penetration, ductility, and solubility in trichloroethylene.

ABSTRACT
This test method deals with the standards for the measurement of apparent viscosity of roofing bitumen by mean of a parallel plate plastometer. This method involves measuring viscosity using pre-determined arbitrary shear stress levels. The method involves molding the sample into a disc of specified dimensions, heating it to a selected temperature and placing it between the plates of a pre-heated apparatus and pressing under the standard conditions for a measured time.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the measurement of apparent viscosity of roofing bitumen by means of a parallel plate plastometer. This test method is applicable for a viscosity range from 102 to 109 Pa·s [103 to 1010 poises]. See Note 1.
Note 1: This relatively simple test method of measuring viscosity uses predetermined, arbitrary shear stress levels. Since roofing bitumens are non-Newtonian, other viscosity test methods may give different results.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Bitumens are viscoelastic materials without sharply defined melting points; they gradually become softer and less viscous as the temperature rises. For this reason, softening points must be determined by an arbitrary and closely defined method if results are to be reproducible.
4.2 The softening point is useful in the classification of bitumens, as one element in establishing the uniformity of shipments or sources of supply, and is indicative of the tendency of the material to flow at elevated temperatures encountered in service.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the softening point of bitumen in the range from 30 to 157 °C [86 to 315 °F] using the ring-and-ball apparatus immersed in distilled water [30 to 80 °C] or USP glycerin (above 80 to 157 °C).
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 One of the functions of a roofing aggregate is to shield the roofing membrane from sunlight that may be destructive to the roofing membrane. This test method measures the quantity of gravel needed to exclude light under arbitrary laboratory conditions. This test method need not be performed if the roofing membrane is not affected by light exposure.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method measures the quantity of aggregate needed to provide an opaque layer under laboratory conditions. Aggregate size Numbers 1 through 8, as listed in Classification D448, may be tested.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 When asphalts are maintained at elevated temperatures in the presence of air, their characteristics may change. Certain blown asphalts also soften when maintained near, and particularly above, their final blowing temperatures under virtually air-free conditions. This may happen if the asphalt is overheated for application purposes. This practice provides a uniform heat-treatment procedure and methods for evaluating the effect of this treatment on some of the characteristics of asphalts. Changes observed when asphalts are overheated are not indicative of changes to be expected when asphalts are heated to normal application temperatures.
SCOPE
1.1 This practice covers a procedure for evaluating some of the effects on asphalts of heating in the presence of little or no air.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 The quantities of mineral aggregate adhered to the surface of a roof vary with the characteristics and total amount of the aggregate. Mineral aggregate shields bituminous membranes from solar radiation. Unadhered mineral aggregate can be displaced by wind, water, and traffic, exposing the bitumen.
5.2 This test method provides a laboratory means of determining and recording the mass of aggregate that adheres to a bituminous pour coat.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method determines the adhesion of mineral aggregate when applied over a pour coat of hot bitumen on a roof membrane.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
SCOPE
1.1 This test method outlines a procedure for measuring the apparent viscosity of asphalt from 38 to 260°C [100 to 500°F] using a rotational viscometer and a temperature-controlled thermal chamber for maintaining the test temperature.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
When asphalts are maintained at elevated temperatures in the presence of air, their characteristics may change.
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
The quantities of mineral aggregate adhered to the surface of a roof vary with the characteristics and total amount of the aggregate. Mineral aggregate shields bituminous membranes from solar radiation. Unadhered mineral aggregate can be displaced by wind, water, and traffic, exposing the bitumen.
This test method provides a laboratory means of determining and recording the mass of aggregate that adheres to a bituminous pour coat.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method determines the adhesion of mineral aggregate when applied over a pour coat of hot bitumen on a roof membrane.

ABSTRACT
This test method covers the determination of bitumen content in materials containing at least 25 % bitumen. The sample shall be representative, and if it contains more than 2 % of water it shall be dehydrated. The procedures for the determination of bitumen content in materials are presented in details.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of bitumen content in materials containing at least 25 % bitumen. Bitumen content may usually be expeditiously and accurately determined by Procedure No. 1, Section 7. However, some bituminous materials containing finely divided mineral matter may clog the filter or the mineral residue may not be easily retained, in which cases Procedure No. 2, Section 8, shall be followed.
1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability and regulatory limitations prior to use. The softening point is useful in the classification of bitumens, as one element in establishing the uniformity of shipments or sources of supply, and is indicative of the tendency of the material to flow at elevated temperatures encountered in service.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the softening point of bitumen in the range from 30 to 157°C [86 to 315°F] using the ring-and-ball apparatus immersed in distilled water [30 to 80°C] or USP glycerin (above 80 to 157°C).
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the sampling, testing, and physical requirements of oxidized petroleum asphalt, which when applied in a sufficient thickness over a suitable subgrade and covered with a suitable cover material, will provide a satisfactory waterproof membrane for use as a canal, ditch, and pond lining. The asphalt shall not foam when heated are a specified temperature, when tested using appropriate methods, shall conform accordingly to the following properties: softening point (ring and ball); penetration points; ductility; flash point (Cleveland open cup); solubility in trichloroethylene; and loss in heating.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers an oxidized petroleum asphalt, which, when applied in a sufficient thickness over a suitable subgrade and covered with a suitable cover material, will provide a satisfactory waterproof membrane for use as a canal, ditch, and pond lining.

SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the measurement of apparent viscosity of roofing bitumen by means of a parallel plate plastometer. This test method is applicable for a viscosity range from 102  to 109 Pa·s [103  to 1010  poises]. See Note 1. Note 1—This relatively simple test method of measuring viscosity uses pre-determined arbitrary shear stress levels. Since roofing bitumens are non-Newtonian, other viscosity test methods may give different results.
