Overview
EN 50363-1:2005 (CLC) - Insulating, sheathing and covering materials for low voltage energy cables - Part 1: Cross‑linked elastomeric insulating compounds - specifies material requirements and test criteria for cross‑linked elastomeric insulating compounds used on low‑voltage energy cables. The standard defines compound types (EI2, EI3, EI4, EI6, EI7), their maximum operating temperatures and the mechanical, thermal and environmental performance required. Test methods are given by the EN 60811 series and EN 50396.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Compound types and maximum operating temperatures
- EI2: 180 °C (ordinary duty silicone rubber)
- EI3: 110 °C (ordinary duty EVA or equivalent)
- EI4: 60 °C (ordinary duty ethylene‑propylene rubber)
- EI6 / EI7: 90 °C (EPDM or equivalent; EI6 suited to handling down to −40 °C)
- Mechanical properties
- Minimum median tensile strength and elongation at break are specified per type (e.g., EI2 tensile median ≥ 5.0 N/mm², elongation ≥ 150%; EI3 tensile median ≥ 6.5 N/mm², elongation ≥ 200%).
- Requirements cover values before and after specified thermal ageing treatments.
- Ageing and thermal tests
- Ageing in air oven / air bomb with defined temperatures and durations per compound type (refer to EN 60811 methods).
- Limits on tensile variation and minimum retained elongation after ageing.
- Hot‑set and deformation
- Hot‑set test conditions (temperature, load and duration) and maximum elongation under load and after unloading.
- Low temperature performance
- Bending and elongation tests at specified low temperatures (no cracking; minimum elongation without break).
- Ozone resistance
- Methods A and B (EN 50396) with defined ozone concentrations, temperatures and durations to verify surface resistance to cracking.
- Other tests
- Pressure test at high temperature and other specific checks listed in Table 2; see EN 50363-0 for cross‑references.
Practical applications and users
- Cable manufacturers selecting or qualifying cross‑linked elastomeric insulation for low‑voltage energy cables.
- Compound formulators and material suppliers validating products against EN 50363-1:2005 requirements.
- Test laboratories performing EN 60811 / EN 50396 test suites for compliance and quality control.
- Engineers, purchasers and specifiers writing cable product specifications for building, industrial and utility applications.
- Regulatory and certification bodies assessing conformity to European electrotechnical standards.
Related standards
- EN 50363-0 (general requirements and cross‑references) - read together with Part 1.
- EN 60811 series - detailed test methods for cable insulating materials.
- EN 50396 - ozone resistance test methods.
EN 50363-1:2005 is essential when specifying or testing cross‑linked elastomeric insulating compounds for reliable, standardized performance in low‑voltage cable applications.
