Overview
SIST-TS ETSI/TS 101 773 V1.2.1:2005 defines a comprehensive set of codepoints for message and information elements used across V5 and derived telecommunications protocols within advanced network services (SPAN). This standard, adopted by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), aligns with ETSI specifications and provides a master reference to prevent duplication and ensure correct codepoint allocation for existing and future network protocols.
V5 interfaces are widely used in digital local exchanges for supporting integrated access networks, including narrowband multi-service delivery systems (NMDS) and Loop Emulation Services (LES) over ATM using AAL2. The standard also outlines the reservation of specific codepoints for bodies other than ETSI, such as the ATM Forum, within the Control function element.
Key Topics
- V5 and Derived Protocols: Outlines the allocation, guidance rules, and lists of message type and information element codepoints for V5.1, V5.2, NMDS, and ATM-based protocols.
- Codepoint Management: Provides the protocol for allocating new codepoints, maintaining uniqueness and space for future expansion.
- Reserved Codepoints: Identifies codepoints within the Control function element reserved for external organizations (e.g., ATM Forum), ensuring interoperability and clear protocol responsibilities.
- Protocol-Specific Elements: Covers detailed codepoint structures for PSTN, Control, BCC, Protection, and Link Control protocols on digital exchanges.
- Reference to Related Specifications: Ensures traceability and linkage among all relevant ETSI and ATM Forum documents.
Applications
The codepoints defined in SIST-TS ETSI/TS 101 773 V1.2.1:2005 are critical in:
- Telephone Network Signalling: Facilitates standardized communication between access networks and local exchanges using V5.1 and V5.2 interfaces.
- Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN): Supports NMDS and advanced services over legacy and next-generation networks.
- ATM-Based Loop Emulation: Enables voice and multimedia services over ATM using AAL2, supporting modern telecommunications and broadband rollout.
- Vendor Interoperability: Assists vendors and network operators in ensuring their products support the correct signalling protocols and reserved elements.
- Future Protocol Development: Guides protocol designers in assigning new codepoints, maintaining system compatibility, and ensuring manageability as networks evolve.
Related Standards
To ensure compatibility and comprehensive implementation, refer to the following related standards:
- ETSI EN 300 324-1: V5.1 interface for digital Local Exchange (LE) and Access Network (AN) support.
- ETSI EN 300 347-1: V5.2 interface specification for digital exchanges and access networks.
- ETSI EN 301 141: NMDS (Narrowband Multi-service Delivery System) for ISDN.
- af-vmoa-0145 (ATM Forum): Voice and Multimedia Over ATM - Loop Emulation Service Using AAL2.
- ETSI TS 100 347: Release notes for V5.2 interface within SPAN.
Practical Value
By implementing SIST-TS ETSI/TS 101 773 V1.2.1:2005, network designers and operators benefit from:
- Consistent Codepoint Assignments: Reduces errors and conflicts in protocol development and deployment.
- Enhanced Network Interoperability: Supports seamless integration of equipment from various vendors within advanced broadband and voice networks.
- Standards Compliance: Ensures that implementations align with international best practices and telecommunications standards.
- Future-Ready Solutions: Facilitates proper allocation and reservation of new codepoints for upcoming technologies and organizational requirements, such as those mandated by the ATM Forum.
Aligning with this standard is vital for robust, scalable, and interoperable telephone network deployments and protocol evolution in advanced, multi-service telecommunications environments.

Foreword
This Technical Specification (TS) has been produced by ETSI Technical Committee Services and Protocols for
Advanced Networks (SPAN).
Introduction
The narrowband V5.x interface signalling protocol standards were the original documents which defined a set of
message and information element codepoints. Subsequently other standards have re-used and extended the set. The
present document contains a consolidated list of the superset of message and information element codepoints. Its
purpose is to maintain the current styles and make allocating new unique codepoints easier. It was for this reason that
the work was initiated by the ETSI Technical Working Group SPAN.
