Overview
SIST EN 2088:2005 is a European standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that defines the requirements for aluminium alloy AL-P2014A, in temper T4 or T42, supplied as clad sheet and strip with a thickness between 0.4 mm and 6 mm. This standard is intended for applications in the aerospace industry, where material properties and product reliability are critical for safety and performance.
SIST EN 2088:2005 ensures that aluminium alloy products meet consistent quality and technical specifications necessary for demanding aerospace applications. Adherence to this standard supports compliance with both European and international industry requirements, contributing to product reliability and traceability.
Key Topics
- Material Specification: Requirements for aluminium alloy AL-P2014A, in T4 or T42 conditions, focusing on physical and mechanical properties relevant for aerospace applications.
- Dimensions and Tolerances: Clad sheet and strip products covered by this standard must have a thickness in the range of 0.4 mm to 6 mm, inclusive.
- Cladding Requirements: Specifications for cladding type, thickness, and chemistry, ensuring enhanced corrosion resistance and material performance.
- Production and Delivery: Guidelines for the production processes, including rolling methods and heat treatment, as well as delivery conditions for both manufacturers and purchasers.
- Testing and Inspection: Reference to methods for sampling, mechanical testing, dimensional checks, and external defect inspection, as required for aerospace quality assurance.
- Marking and Traceability: Requirements for product marking and documentation, ensuring easy identification and full traceability of materials.
Applications
SIST EN 2088:2005 is specifically designed for the aerospace sector, where aluminium alloy AL-P2014A’s combination of strength, fatigue resistance, and corrosion protection is required. Common applications include:
- Aircraft Skin Panels: The clad sheet and strip provide lightweight, durable outer surfaces for aircraft fuselages and wings.
- Structural Components: Used in primary and secondary load-bearing elements that benefit from the alloy’s mechanical properties.
- Aerospace Interiors: Aluminium alloy’s formability and finish make it suitable for cabin components, flooring, and support structures.
- Repairs and Modifications: Standardized sheet and strip enable effective maintenance and modification of existing aircraft structures.
Manufacturers, suppliers, and maintenance facilities in the aerospace industry rely on SIST EN 2088:2005 to specify and procure aluminium sheet and strip with assured conformity to performance and safety requirements.
Related Standards
Adherence to SIST EN 2088:2005 often involves reference to complementary European standards in the aerospace series, such as:
- EN 4258: Provides general guidelines for metallic materials standardization in aerospace applications.
- EN 4400-2: Specifies technical requirements for aluminium and aluminium alloy wrought products, including sheet and strip.
- EN 4500-2: Outlines rules for drafting and presenting material standards, particularly for aluminium, aluminium alloys, and magnesium alloys.
These standards collectively support a comprehensive approach to quality, compatibility, and safety in aerospace design and manufacturing.
