Overview
SIST EN 300 052-2 V1.2.4:2005 details the Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma specification for the Multiple Subscriber Number (MSN) supplementary service, applicable to the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) using the Digital Subscriber Signalling System No. one (DSS1) protocol. This standard is vital for suppliers and implementers to clearly document and ensure protocol conformance for ISDN supplementary services, supporting effective interoperability and quality assurance in telecommunications.
By specifying a formalized PICS proforma, the standard enables implementers to state which protocol capabilities are included in their solution-an essential element for conformance assessment, procurement, and regulatory compliance. This edition also updates normative references from earlier ETSs to ETS 300 403, reflecting alignment with current baseline call control standards.
Key benefits of applying this standard include:
- Improved interoperability between ISDN equipment from different vendors
- Simplified conformance testing through clearly defined documentation
- Transparent supplier declarations to facilitate comparison and integration
Key Topics
Implementing this standard involves several core areas:
- PICS Proforma Structure: Guidance is given on completing the proforma, providing information on mandatory and optional capabilities, and ensuring correct identification of products under test.
- Identification Requirements: Implementations must be clearly identified in terms of the Implementation Under Test (IUT), System Under Test (SUT), product supplier, and relevant contact information.
- Major and Subsidiary Capabilities: Tables list user and network functional capabilities that must be supported or declared, including call handling, number management, and support for either user-side or network-side implementations.
- Protocol Data Elements: Requirements concerning support for protocol data units, including handling of called and calling party number information elements, and associated network layer procedures.
- Conformance Declaration: The supplier completes the global statement of conformance, specifying whether all mandatory requirements of the protocol are met and explaining any exceptions if present.
- Link to ISO/IEC 9646: The proforma and supporting information align with international methodologies for conformance assessment under ISO/IEC 9646.
Applications
This standard is essential for:
- Telecommunications Equipment Manufacturers: Documenting and declaring supported features for ISDN equipment-such as PBXs, network switches, and terminal devices-ensuring correct MSN supplementary service behavior.
- Network Operators: Assessing suppliers’ protocol conformance to support smooth integration of new network elements and minimizing interoperability issues.
- Testing and Certification Bodies: Providing a standardized basis for conformance testing, aiding in quality assurance and regulatory compliance for ISDN DSS1 implementations.
- Procurement and System Integrators: Using PICS declarations as part of the vendor selection and system validation process to guarantee capability alignment and minimize deployment risk.
Related Standards
For a complete understanding of ISDN MSN supplementary service conformance and for cross-reference, consider the following closely related standards:
- EN 300 052-1: ISDN; MSN supplementary service; DSS1 protocol; Protocol specification (defines technical details implemented by the PICS in part 2)
- EN 300 403-1: ISDN; DSS1 protocol; Signalling network layer for basic call control (the updated baseline for call control per the current proforma)
- EN 300 195-1/2: ISDN; Supplementary service interactions; DSS1 protocol (specification and PICS for other supplementary services)
- ISO/IEC 9646: Conformance testing methodology and framework (basis for PICS structure and use)
- ITU-T I.130 & I.411: Defining ISDN network configurations and service characterization
Adhering to SIST EN 300 052-2 helps ensure that ISDN products and services reliably implement and declare support for multiple subscriber number features, facilitating more robust and interoperable digital telecommunications networks across Europe.

Foreword
This European Standard (Telecommunications series) has been produced by ETSI Technical Committee Signalling
Protocols and Switching (SPS).
The present document is part 2 of a multi-part standard covering the Digital Subscriber Signalling System No. one
(DSS1) protocol specification for the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Multiple Subscriber Number (MSN)
supplementary service, as described below:
Part 1: "Protocol specification";
Part 2: "Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma specification";
Part 3: "Test Suite Structure and Test Purposes (TSS&TP) specification for the user";
Part 4: "Abstract Test Suite (ATS) and partial Protocol Implementation eXtra Information for Testing (PIXIT)
proforma specification for the user";
Part 5: "Test Suite Structure and Test Purposes (TSS&TP) specification for the network";
Part 6: "Abstract Test Suite (ATS) and partial Protocol Implementation eXtra Information for Testing (PIXIT)
proforma specification for the network".
To evaluate conformance of a particular implementation, it is necessary to have a statement of which capabilities and
options have been implemented for a given Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocol. Such a statement is called a
Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS).
The present version updates the references to the basic call specifications.

6 EN 300 052-2 V1.2.4 (1998-06)
1 Scope
This second part of EN 300 052 is applicable to the stage three of the Multiple Subscriber Number (MSN)
supplementary service for the pan-European Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) as provided by European
public telecommunications operators at the T reference point or coincident S and T reference point (as defined in
ITU-T Recommendation I.411 [9]) by means of the Digital Subscriber Signalling System No. one (DSS1) protocol.
Stage three identifies the protocol procedures and switching functions needed to support a telecommunications service
(see CCITT Recommendation I.130 [8]).
The present document provides the Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma for the ISDN
DSS1 MSN supplementary service protocol as specified in EN 300 052-1 [1] in compliance with the relevant
requirements and in accordance with the relevant guidance given in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [7].
The supplier of a protocol implementation which is claimed to conform to EN 300 052-1 [1] is required to complete a
copy of the PICS proforma provided in annex A of the present document and is required to provide the information
necessary to identify both the supplier and the implementation.

3 Definitions
For the purposes of the present document, the following definitions apply, in addition to those given in
EN 300 052-1 [1]:
Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS): A statement made by the supplier of an Open Systems
Interconnection (OSI) implementation or system, stating which capabilities have been implemented for a given OSI
protocol (see ISO/IEC 9646-1 [6]).
PICS proforma: A document, in the form of a questionnaire, designed by the protocol specifier or conformance test
suite specifier, which, when completed for an OSI implementation or system, becomes the PICS (see
ISO/IEC 9646-1 [6]).
static conformance review: A review of the extent to which the static conformance requirements are met by the IUT,
accomplished by comparing the PICS with the static conformance requirements expressed in the relevant standard(s)
(see ISO/IEC 9646-1 [6]).
