Overview

SIST EN IEC 63522-4:2026 outlines standardized procedures for the dielectric strength testing of electrical relays. Developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC/CLC), this part of the IEC 63522 series specifies test methods designed to verify the insulation performance of relays under various anticipated conditions, including transportation, storage, and operation. The standard serves to assess a device's ability to withstand high-voltage stresses without insulation breakdown, ensuring reliability and safety in practical applications.

The document complements general guidance in EN IEC 63522-0 and provides manufacturers and test laboratories with clear procedures for conducting dielectric strength tests consistently across the industry.

Key Topics

  • Purpose: To confirm the ability of relay insulation to withstand specified voltages applied between circuits and across open contacts, preventing electric breakdown.
  • Test Conditions: Covers preconditioning (such as dry heat and damp heat tests) to simulate operational and environmental stresses in line with IEC 60068-2-2 (dry heat) and IEC 60068-2-67 (damp heat).
  • Test Procedure:
    • Application of standardized AC or DC voltage between designated terminals.
    • Test voltages are applied according to specified duration and waveform requirements, typically 50 Hz or 60 Hz, with options for DC testing.
    • Special care is taken to disconnect or bridge components that may not tolerate the test voltage (e.g., LEDs, diodes, varistors).
  • Evaluation Criteria:
    • No occurrence of flashover, puncture, or breakdown during the test.
    • Documentation of test conditions, voltages, durations, and any failures.
  • Test Equipment: Equipment must comply with IEC 61180 requirements for high-voltage testing of low-voltage devices.
  • Reporting: Detailed reports ensure reproducibility and traceability, documenting applied voltages, test durations, occurrences of breakdown, and relevant observations.
  • Terminology: Clearly defines concepts such as breakdown voltage, electric breakdown, sparkover, flashover, and puncture, aligning with internationally accepted terminology.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 63522-4:2026 is vital in the following contexts:

  • Product Certification: Manufacturers rely on dielectric strength tests during product certification to demonstrate regulatory compliance related to electrical safety.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensures batch consistency and identifies manufacturing defects in the insulation system, critical for long-term operational reliability.
  • R&D and Type Testing: Employed during development and type qualification to benchmark insulation performance and validate designs before market release.
  • Maintenance and Acceptance: Utilized by test facilities for acceptance and routine inspection of relays, particularly in sectors where equipment is exposed to fluctuating or harsh environmental conditions.
  • Industry Sectors:
    • Power generation and distribution
    • Industrial automation
    • Transportation (railways, automotive)
    • Telecommunication systems
    • Building automation

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
