Overview
SIST EN 300 201 V1.2.1:2004 defines the service description for the Call Forwarding No Reply (CFNR) supplementary service within the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) environment. Managed by SIST and harmonized with the European EN 300 201 standard, this specification details how calls to an ISDN line can be automatically redirected to another user if the original recipient does not respond within a predefined time interval. The document addresses both user-initiated control over the forwarding timer and the integration with supplementary services such as Completion of Calls to Busy Subscriber (CCBS).
The standard outlines the essential procedures for activation, deactivation, and interrogation of the CFNR service, alongside the interaction requirements between public and private ISDNs. It provides a comprehensive framework for service providers and ISDN network operators to ensure consistent and user-friendly experiences in call forwarding scenarios.
Key Topics
- Supplementary Service Description: Focuses on the user perspective of ISDN CFNR and aligns with ITU-T Recommendation I.130 for service characterization.
- Forwarding Logic and User Control: Details how the served user can define the timer interval after which calls are forwarded, and how forwarding can be applied to all or selected services or ISDN numbers.
- Subscription Options: Describes configurable options, such as whether users are notified of call forwarding, if the caller is notified, and what information is presented.
- Service Provision and Withdrawal: Explains how CFNR is activated, deactivated, and removed as a service, including normal and exceptional scenarios.
- Interworking with Non-ISDN and Private Networks: Specifies requirements for interoperating with other telecommunications networks to ensure seamless call forwarding.
- Service Interactions: Addresses the behavior of CFNR when used alongside other supplementary services like call waiting, call hold, number identification, and call barring.
- User Interrogation: Provides mechanisms for users to determine the status and settings of CFNR on their line or access.
Applications
The CFNR supplementary service standardized in SIST EN 300 201 V1.2.1:2004 is highly relevant for:
- Business and Enterprise Telephony: Ensures important calls are not missed when staff are unavailable by forwarding unanswered calls to alternate colleagues, voicemail, or mobile devices.
- Customer Support Centers: Improves service response by redirecting unresponsive lines to backup operators or overflow teams.
- Remote and Flexible Work Environments: Facilitates auto-redirection of calls to remote offices or home offices when primary endpoints do not reply.
- Private ISDN Networks: Offers internal flexibility by allowing organizations to manage no-reply forwarding behavior across multi-site ISDN deployments.
- Public Telecommunications Networks: Harmonizes user expectations and services across different ISDN service providers and geographies.
The ability for users and administrators to control the forwarding timer and destination is critical for optimizing call handling and ensuring a responsive communication environment.
Related Standards
For comprehensive implementation and compatibility, the following standards and recommendations are closely related:
- ITU-T Recommendation I.130: Defines methods for characterizing and describing telecommunication services in ISDN.
- ITU-T Recommendation I.112: Provides vocabulary and foundational concepts for ISDN.
- ITU-T Recommendation E.164: Outlines the international public telecommunication numbering plan for proper call routing and identification.
- ITU-T Recommendation I.210: Principles for provisioning telecommunication services via ISDN.
- ETSI ETS 300 345: Details interworking between public and private ISDNs for supplementary service support.
Organizations deploying CFNR should ensure their systems are also aligned with these base ISDN service and supplementary service frameworks for complete and interoperable telephony solutions.
