Overview
SIST EN ISO 14890:2026 – Conveyor belts – Specification for rubber- or plastics-covered conveyor belts of textile construction for general use sets out the requirements for conveyor belts with textile carcasses and rubber or plastics covers, intended for general surface use on flat or troughed idlers. This standard is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and users in industries where reliable and standardized conveyor belting solutions are crucial for efficient material handling.
EN ISO 14890 does not apply to light conveyor belts as described in ISO 21183-1, focusing instead on heavier general-purpose belting suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. Developed by CEN in partnership with ISO, this standard harmonizes product requirements, ensuring safety, quality, and interoperability across international markets.
Key Topics
SIST EN ISO 14890:2026 addresses a comprehensive set of characteristics and requirements for textile-based conveyor belts, including:
Designation and Ordering: Guidance on how belts should be designated for specification and procurement, detailing belt length, width, type, cover thickness, tensile strength, number of plies, textile materials, and safety category as per EN 12882.
Construction and Materials:
- Types of textile carcass: mono-ply, duo-ply, multi-ply, and solid woven belts.
- Cover types: rubber or plastics, including thickness and classification according to ISO 10247.
- Requirements for breaker layers and fabric piles.
Dimensions and Tolerances:
- Specified tolerances on belt length, width, thickness, and cover thickness.
- Guidance for measuring and verifying belt dimensions and testing procedures.
Mechanical Properties:
- Minimum values and testing methods for full thickness tensile strength, elongation at reference force, as well as adhesion strengths between plies and between cover and carcass.
- Troughability requirements according to ISO 703, ensuring belts are suitable for use on troughed idlers.
Joints and Fabrication:
- Permitted numbers and locations of longitudinal and transverse joints in multi-ply belts.
- Restrictions for joints in mono-ply, duo-ply, and solid woven belts.
Identification and Marking:
- Requirements for marking the belt with manufacturer’s name, compliance, date, and safety category.
Applications
SIST EN ISO 14890:2026 is widely applicable across industries where robust and reliable conveyor systems are essential. Its standardized approach offers significant advantages in sectors such as:
- Mining and Quarrying: For the transport of aggregates, ores, and coal.
- Cement and Construction: Moving raw materials, clinker, and finished goods.
- Bulk Material Handling: Grain, fertilizer, chemicals, and waste handling facilities.
- General Manufacturing: Production and assembly lines requiring consistent, high-performance belt systems.
The standard streamlines the specification, procurement, and maintenance of conveyor belts, enhancing compatibility in international projects and supporting operational safety and efficiency.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive compliance and integration, consider the following related standards:
- ISO 21183-1: Light conveyor belts – Principal characteristics and applications (not covered by EN ISO 14890).
- EN 12882: Safety categories for conveyor belts in general use.
- ISO 10247: Conveyor belt cover classification.
- ISO 282: Conveyor belts – Sampling.
- ISO 283: Textile conveyor belts – Test methods for tensile strength and elongation.
- ISO 252: Adhesion between constituent elements – Test methods.
By referencing SIST EN ISO 14890:2026, industry stakeholders ensure best practices in the design, selection, and use of textile-based conveyor belting with rubber or plastics covers, aligned with current international safety and performance expectations.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)
patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that
this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at
www.iso.org/patents. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to the World Trade
Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see www.iso.org/iso/foreword.html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC41 Pulleys and belts (including veebelts),
Subcommittee SC 3, Conveyor belts, in collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization
(CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 188, Conveyor belts, in accordance with the Agreement on technical
cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 14890:2013), which has been technically
revised and minor editorial revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— Remove code letter G and its correspondent yarn from Table 5;
— Revise maximum number of longitudinal joints of Table 11;
— Include more tensile strength categories in Table 12;
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
