ETSI ETS 300 248/A1 ed.1 (1995-11) - Business TeleCommunications (BTC); Open Network Provision (ONP) technical requirements; 2 048 kbit/s digital unstructured leased line (D2048U); Terminal equipment interface
Overview
SIST ETS 300 248 E1:2004/A1:2004 details the technical requirements for terminal equipment interfaces of 2 048 kbit/s digital unstructured leased lines (D2048U) within Business TeleCommunications (BTC) and Open Network Provision (ONP) contexts. This Slovenian standard, aligned with ETSI guidelines, introduces an important amendment recommending the use of the ISDN basic rate connector over previous primary rate ISDN connectors, addressing tolerance and compatibility issues in network equipment interfaces.
Key Topics
- Digital Unstructured Leased Line (D2048U): Specifications for the interface of 2 048 kbit/s leased lines, widely used in business data transmission and carrier networks.
- Terminal Equipment Interface: Requirements for physical connection methods between customer terminal equipment and the telecommunications network.
- Connector Standardization: Shift to the ISDN basic rate connector, replacing connectors specified for primary rate ISDN to resolve manufacturing and tolerance issues.
- Alternative Connection Methods: Approval for terminal equipment to support various wiring arrangements and connector types, including hardwired options and optional additional connectors.
- Physical Characteristics: Mandates use of solid conductors (0.4 to 0.6 mm diameter) for connectivity, allowing for either direct attachment or unterminated wire connections, to ensure equipment versatility.
- EMC Considerations: Guidance to use shielded cords or cables where necessary to meet electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
Applications
SIST ETS 300 248 E1:2004/A1:2004 is especially relevant in the following scenarios:
- Telecommunications Service Providers: Ensures interoperability and reliability of leased line services for business clients, using standardized connectors for minimal installation issues.
- Network Equipment Manufacturers: Guides interface design and manufacturing, supporting compliant termination solutions and enhancing compatibility across European and international markets.
- Enterprise Networking: Provides clear, consistent requirements for integrating digital leased lines into complex enterprise networks, aiding IT teams in deployment and maintenance.
- Installation and Maintenance: Recommends practical wiring and connector solutions, making field installations more robust and reducing the risk of connection errors due to non-standard parts.
- Cross-Network Compatibility: Simplifies connections with a unified ISDN basic rate connector, promoting ease of integration across different network infrastructures and reducing long-term support costs.
Related Standards
For organizations and professionals implementing or referencing SIST ETS 300 248 E1:2004/A1:2004, the following standards may also be relevant:
- ETSI ETS 300 248: Original European standard for BTC ONP technical requirements for digital leased line terminal interfaces.
- ISO/IEC 10173: Specification originally referenced for connector type prior to this amendment.
- EN 300 247: Addresses technical features for leased lines of differing rates.
- ISDN Standards (Basic and Primary Rate): Guidance on interface protocols and hardware required for ISDN connectivity.
- Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) Standards: Ensure proper shielding and noise mitigation for interfaces and cable runs in diverse telecom environments.
By following SIST ETS 300 248 E1:2004/A1:2004, businesses, network operators, and manufacturers benefit from streamlined, reliable digital leased line services, simplified installation processes, and robust, future-proof network interfaces, all while maintaining alignment with international best practices and regulatory policies.

Foreword
This amendment to ETS 300 248 (1993) has been produced by the Business TeleCommunications (BTC)
Technical Committee of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
This amendment changes ETS 300 248 (1993) as described below:
The connector type specified, conforming to ISO/IEC 10173 (1991), cannot be manufactured. Since a
standardized connector is not available, the terminal equipment is required to provide either a point for
connection of solid conductors, or solid conductors themselves. In order to allow connection to be made
using other methods, the TE is permitted to be supplied with other connection schemes (e.g. connectors).

Currently no standardized connector is readily available. Consequently, the only method of connection that
can be specified in this ETS is the use of solid conductors of 0,4 to 0,6 mm. This ETS requires the TE to
be capable of presenting either a point for the attachment of unterminated solid conductors, or solid
conductors themselves (see subclause 5.1.1). It is a requirement that such a connection method be
available to be provided for use with the TE if necessary.
In order to allow connection to be made using other methods (e.g. connectors), the TE is permitted to be
supplied with a connection method suitable for use with those methods (see subclause 5.1.2).
