Overview
SIST I-ETS 300 302-4 E1:2003 is a Slovenian standard that defines the electroacoustic characteristics of videotelephony terminals using the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). Part 4 of this standard specifically addresses the audio aspects related to wideband (7 kHz) coding and the performance of loudspeaking and handsfree functions in videotelephony terminals. The standard is closely aligned with international best practices, referencing key ETSI and ITU-T recommendations for audio and videotelephony services over ISDN.
The main objective of this standard is to ensure high-quality audio performance, proper loudness levels, and consistent handsfree operation for videotelephony across ISDN systems, utilizing CCITT G.722 wideband encoding. By defining these requirements, SIST I-ETS 300 302-4 ensures interoperability and user satisfaction in environments relying on ISDN videotelephony.
Key Topics
- Wideband Audio Coding: Specifies the use of Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation (ADPCM) according to CCITT Recommendation G.722 for 7 kHz audio bandwidth, offering improved clarity over traditional telephony.
- Electroacoustic Parameters: Addresses sending and receiving loudness ratings, sensitivity, frequency response, distortion, volume control, and noise performance.
- Loudspeaking and Handsfree Functions: Defines requirements for loudspeaker and handsfree modes, essential for videotelephony terminals, including user positioning and terminal types (compact or with separated audio front end).
- Terminal Coupling and Stability: Covers terminal coupling loss, weighted terminal coupling loss, and overall system stability to safeguard echo control and voice clarity.
- Testing and Compliance: Provides test conditions and corrective factors for evaluation, ensuring that manufacturers can objectively assess conformity.
Applications
SIST I-ETS 300 302-4 E1:2003 is highly relevant for organizations and manufacturers involved in the design, development, or deployment of videotelephony terminals on ISDN networks. Practical applications include:
- ISDN Videotelephony Terminals: Ensures devices deliver high audio quality, both for end-users in business communication and remote collaboration scenarios.
- Handsfree Conference Systems: Guides the design and testing of conference equipment where multiple participants may interact via loudspeaking terminals.
- Telecommunication Service Providers: Helps providers standardize and certify equipment for ISDN videotelephony services, optimizing end-to-end communication quality.
- Product Compliance and Procurement: Assists manufacturers and buyers in benchmarking products against essential electroacoustic and functional criteria for ISDN videotelephony.
- Interoperability and Quality Assurance: Facilitates seamless operation across different ISDN systems and international networks by aligning with ETSI and ITU-T recommendations.

Foreword
Part 4 of this Interim European Telecommunication Standard (I-ETS) has been produced by the Terminal
Equipment (TE) Technical Committee of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
An ETSI standard may be given I-ETS status either because it is regarded as a provisional solution ahead
of a more advanced standard, or because it is immature and requires a "trial period". The life of an I-ETS
is limited to three years after which it can be converted into an ETS, have it's life extended for a further
two years, be replaced by a new version, or be withdrawn.
This I-ETS is part 4 of a multipart standard covering "Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN);
Videotelephony teleservice", as described below:
Part 1: "Electroacoustic characteristics for handset telephony function when using Pulse Code
Modulation encoding".
Part 2: "Audio aspects - Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) A-law loudspeaking and handsfree".
Part 3: "Audio aspects - wideband handset".
Part 4: "Audio aspects - wideband coding and loudspeaking or handsfree function".

1 Scope
This Interim European Telecommunication Standard (I-ETS) specifies the electroacoustic characteristics
for 7 kHz bandwidth loudspeaking and handsfree functions implemented in videotelephony terminals
intended for use in the videotelephone teleservice in the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) using
Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation (ADPCM) encoding according to
CCITT Recommendation G.722 (see annex A). Those terminals will be connected to the basic access of
the coincident S and T reference point of the ISDN.
The videotelephony teleservice in the ISDN is described in ETS 300 264 (see annex A).
The requirements of this I-ETS specify those characteristics which deviate from those of an ISDN 7 kHz
telephony terminal. Those deviations are due to conditions which are special for videotelephony
applications (e.g. delay, measurement position). The corresponding requirements for an ISDN 7 kHz
telephony loudspeaking and handsfree terminal can be found in I-ETS 300 245-6 [1].
