Overview

SIST ETS 300 747 E1:2003 is a critical European standard focusing on telecommunications security, specifically addressing service access control and synchronization for audiovisual services. Published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard harmonizes with ETSI ETS 300 747 Edition 1 and concerns systems operating over the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). It defines essential protocols and functions to ensure secure and synchronized access control in multipoint audiovisual communication environments.

By specifying the necessary confidentiality-related protocol extensions, this standard underpins the security and integrity of audiovisual conferencing, catering to scenarios with varying trust levels in Multipoint Control Units (MCUs).

Key Topics

  • Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) Roles:
    • Trusted MCU (TMCU): Handles all decryption and security functions in a secure location, simplifying key management and participant authentication.
    • Non-trusted MCU (NMCU): Relies on external Chair-Control Terminals (CCTs) for key distribution and participant authentication, with switching capabilities as encrypted data mixing is not allowed.
  • Service Access Control:
    • Authentication procedures for all conference participants.
    • Initialization and secure management of audiovisual conferencing sessions.
    • Procedures for participants joining or leaving, including secure key redistribution.
  • Confidentiality System Synchronization:
    • Mechanisms for synchronizing session key activation across all participants whenever session modifications occur.
    • Use of standardized control signals and messages for reliable key distribution and confirmation.
  • Chair-Control Functions:
    • Distribution and handover of the chair-control token.
    • Session management, including speaker switching and conference termination commands.
  • Abnormal Event Handling:
    • Protocols for session termination upon abrupt disconnections or abnormal events.

Applications

SIST ETS 300 747 E1:2003 is valuable for organizations and service providers involved in:

  • Audiovisual Conferencing: Ensuring secure and controlled access for participants in multipoint audiovisual communications across ISDN-based systems.
  • Telecommunication Security: Implementing robust authentication, key management, and confidentiality synchronization procedures in compliance with international best practices.
  • Enterprise Video Collaboration: Supporting secure, scalable conferencing where sensitive information may be exchanged between remote participants.
  • Government and Defense Communications: Guaranteeing secure session control and strict access authorization in highly regulated environments.
  • Network Equipment Vendors: Designing and validating MCUs, endpoints, and systems compliant with established security protocols for audio, video, and data.

The standard also assists system integrators and network architects in selecting suitable MCU trust models and implementing the required procedures for reliable and synchronized access control in conferencing systems.

Related Standards

Compliance with SIST ETS 300 747 E1:2003 may require reference to related international and European standards, including:

  • ITU-T Recommendation H.233: Confidentiality system for audiovisual services.
  • ITU-T Recommendation H.234: Encryption key management and authentication system for audiovisual services.
  • ITU-T Recommendation H.231: Multipoint control units for audiovisual systems using digital channels up to 2 Mbit/s.
  • ITU-T Recommendation H.243: Procedures for establishing communication between three or more audiovisual terminals.
  • ITU-T Recommendation H.230: Frame-synchronous control and indication signals.
  • ETS 300 840: Telecommunications Security; ISDN Confidentiality system for audiovisual services.

By aligning with these related standards, organizations can ensure comprehensive security and interoperability across their audiovisual service platforms.
