General Information

Abstract

To describe the extensions required for the support of the generic addressing and transport protocol (GAT) mechnism over the public network nodal interface (NNI);  The application makes use of the Enhanced Application Transport Mechansim described in Recommendation Q.765.2000 for bearer related signalling, and the transaction capability (TC) for signalling involving no bearer.  This recommendation specifies the respective users (i.e. APM-user, TC-user) to support signalling applications using the Generic Addressing and Transport Protocol as defined in ITU-T Rec Q.gft. (endorsement deliverable ITU-T recommendation Q.765.GAT)

Overview

SIST EN 301 850-1 V1.1.1:2005 specifies protocol extensions for the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and Signalling System No.7 (SS7), focusing on the ISDN User Part (ISUP) and its support for the Generic Addressing and Transport (GAT) protocol over public network nodal interfaces (NNI). Produced by SIST and aligned with modified ITU-T Recommendation Q.765.4, this standard details mechanisms for application transport and enhances bearer and non-bearer related signalling. It promotes interoperability and advanced integration of telecommunication services within modern digital networks.

Key Topics

  • ISDN & SS7 Integration: Provides guidelines for implementing ISDN User Part (ISUP) over SS7 networks, enhancing the reliability and performance of digital signalling.
  • Generic Addressing and Transport Protocol (GAT): Details extensions necessary to support GAT, facilitating advanced addressing and routing capabilities.
  • Application Transport Mechanism: Describes use of the Enhanced Application Transport Mechanism (per ITU-T Recommendation Q.765.2000) for efficient bearer-related signalling.
  • Transaction Capability (TC): Specifies how TC is used for signalling instances without bearer involvement, improving flexibility in service applications.
  • NNI Support: Ensures effective communication over the network nodal interface, critical for robust public network interconnection.
  • Protocol Specification: Lays out interoperability requirements, referencing international standards for proper implementation.
  • User Definitions: Clarifies roles of APM-users and TC-users in the context of GAT protocol implementation.
  • Modifications to ITU-T Recommendations: Identifies necessary adaptations of referenced ITU-T standards to suit European implementations.

Applications

This standard has significant practical value for public and private telecommunication network operators, equipment manufacturers, and integrators, particularly:

  • Voice and Data Services: Enables deployment of advanced voice, data, and multimedia services over ISDN and SS7 infrastructure.
  • Carrier Interoperability: Supports seamless integration and service delivery across national and international operators through a standardized signalling protocol.
  • Network Upgrades: Provides a framework for upgrading legacy systems to support new protocols such as GAT without extensive overhauls.
  • Service Evolution: Facilitates the evolution and scaling of existing networks, allowing operators to introduce new addressing and transport capabilities while maintaining compatibility.
  • Efficient Resource Management: Ensures optimal use of network resources by supporting both bearer-related and non-bearer signalling applications.

Related Standards

For comprehensive system integration and compliance, SIST EN 301 850-1 V1.1.1:2005 references several related standards, including:
