Overview

SIST EN 15077:2026 is a European Standard developed by CEN for sodium hypochlorite used in the treatment of swimming pool and spa water. This standard specifies the characteristics, requirements, and test methods for sodium hypochlorite, ensuring its suitability and safety for water treatment applications in recreational aquatic environments. The document also provides important information on commercial forms, physical and chemical properties, purity criteria, labelling, transportation, storage, and safe handling practices for sodium hypochlorite.

Keywords: SIST EN 15077:2026, sodium hypochlorite standard, swimming pool water treatment, spa water disinfection, CEN standard, water purification chemicals, sodium hypochlorite requirements

Key Topics

  • Identification and Chemical Properties

    • Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), also known as liquid bleach, is an alkaline solution with a pH above 11 and has strong oxidizing properties.
    • Supplied as an aqueous solution, typically up to 18% active chlorine by mass.
    • Physical characteristics include a clear, yellowish-green appearance and faint chlorine odor.
  • Purity and Composition

    • Specifies minimum purity requirements, with limits for impurities such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury, and others.
    • Commercial product must be clearly labeled and delivered in compliant containers to prevent contamination.
  • Test Methods

    • Requirements for sampling and analysis refer to established standards such as EN 901.
  • Labelling, Transportation, and Storage

    • Enforces clear labelling of sodium hypochlorite containers, including hazard identification (e.g., corrosive, dangerous to aquatic life).
    • Requires compliance with international transport regulations (ADR, IMDG, IATA).
    • Stipulates suitable materials for storage containers and conditions to prolong product stability and minimize chlorate formation.
  • Safety and Handling

    • Emphasizes the provision of up-to-date safety instructions by suppliers.
    • Outlines emergency procedures for accidents involving skin/eye contact, spillage, and fire risks.

Applications

Sodium hypochlorite regulated under SIST EN 15077:2026 is widely utilized for:

  • Swimming Pool and Spa Disinfection

    • Acts as an effective biocidal agent for controlling microbial contaminants.
    • Supports safe and hygienic aquatic environments by maintaining recommended levels of residual chlorine.
    • Used in both commercial and public pool facilities, as well as residential pools and spas.
  • Water Treatment Chemical Formulations

    • Can be used directly or as an ingredient in blended formulations for water treatment.
    • Provides a cost-effective solution for ongoing maintenance of water quality and chlorine residuals.
  • Safe Handling Recommendations

    • Application by positive-displacement metering pumps allows controlled dosing.
    • Measures to neutralize excess product include using reducing agents to maintain safe, compliant chlorine levels and minimize environmental impact.

Related Standards

For organizations, facility managers, and suppliers working with chemicals for water treatment, it is important to be aware of associated and referenced standards:

  • EN 901: Relates to chemicals used for water intended for human consumption - Sodium hypochlorite.
  • Regulation (EU) No 528/2012: Concerns the market availability and use of biocidal products.
  • Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008: Covers classification, labelling, and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP regulation).
  • EN 17818: Devices for in-situ generation of biocides - Active chlorine generated from sodium chloride by electrolysis.
  • Directive (EU) 2020/2184: On the quality of water intended for human consumption.

Compliance with SIST EN 15077:2026 ensures products meet stringent safety, quality, and performance standards vital for the effective and responsible use of sodium hypochlorite in recreational water treatment. Adhering to these guidelines helps promote public health, safety, and environmental protection in aquatic facilities across Europe.
