General Information

Abstract

The present document defines classes of environmental conditions and their severities to which telecommunication equipment may be exposed. The severities specified are those which will have a low probability of being exceeded; generally less than 1 %. The present document applies to equipment designed principally for maritime use. Conditions of use vary significantly in relation to the size of the vessel and the function for which it was designed. The reader should ensure that the relevant classes are chosen to suit this particular application. The present document covers the following types of vessel:
- vessel propelled by mechanical means, including offshore units;
- vessel not propelled by mechanical means, including sailing boats and life rafts.
The classes defined apply to all sizes of vessel from pleasure craft to trawlers, ferry boats, icebreakers and cargo ships including tankers.

Overview

SIST EN 300 019-1-6 V2.1.2:2006 – developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and aligned with ETSI EN 300 019-1-6 – specifies the environmental conditions and environmental test classes relevant to telecommunications equipment installed on ships. Its goal is to ensure reliable operation by defining varied environmental stresses, such as temperature, humidity, vibration, and exposure to mechanical or chemical agents, that telecom equipment may encounter in maritime applications.

This standard applies to a wide range of vessels, from pleasure boats to cargo ships and icebreakers, including both mechanically and non-mechanically propelled ships (e.g., life rafts, sailing boats, offshore units). The classification of environmental conditions enables manufacturers, shipbuilders, and equipment operators to select or design telecom devices that are fit for the unique challenges presented by ship environments.

Key Topics

Environmental Classes:
The standard categorizes shipboard locations into specific classes depending on their protection from weather and exposure severity:

  • Class 6.1: Totally Weatherprotected Locations
    • Installations in heated, ventilated areas, shielded from direct weather, salt mist, and dust.
  • Class 6.2: Partly Weatherprotected Locations
    • Areas with exposure to temperature extremes, rain, humidity, radiation, and potential mould or fauna.
  • Class 6.3: Non-weatherprotected Locations
    • Installations exposed to direct weather forces, heavy seas, dust, salt, and temperature extremes, for the most severe operating environment.

Environmental Factors Assessed:

  • Climatic Conditions:
    • Temperature ranges, humidity, and rapid temperature changes prevalent at sea.
  • Biological Influences:
    • Presence and risks from mould, fungus, rodents, and other animals.
  • Chemically Active Substances:
    • Exposure to salt mist, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and other marine pollutants.
  • Mechanical Stresses:
    • Vibration, shock, angular deviation, and forces experienced during vessel operation.

Applications

Maritime Telecommunications Equipment:

SIST EN 300 019-1-6 is essential for:

  • Designers and manufacturers of telecommunication equipment, ensuring that marine electronics are robust against environmental stresses specific to ship environments.
  • Shipbuilders and system integrators, helping them specify equipment according to its deployment location-whether in protected enclosures or exposed areas.
  • Operators and maintenance teams who need to select and maintain telecom equipment based on its resilience to salt, humidity, vibration, and mechanical impacts.

Types of Vessels Covered:

  • Mechanically propelled: cargo ships, icebreakers, trawlers, ferry boats, offshore units
  • Non-mechanically propelled: sailing boats, life rafts, pleasure craft

By referencing this standard, stakeholders assure compliance with best practices in marine environmental engineering for telecommunication applications, reducing failure risks and improving lifecycle performance of onboard systems.

Related Standards

To broaden environmental resilience and ensure harmonized testing in the maritime sector, related standards include:

  • IEC 60721-3-6: Environmental condition classification for ship environments
  • IEC 60068-2-27: Environmental testing procedures for mechanical shock
  • IEC 60721-2-1: Climatic conditions in natural environments (temperature and humidity)
  • IEC 60092-502: Electrical installations in ships (special features for tankers)
  • ISO 2041: Vibration and shock vocabulary
  • ETSI ETR 035: Guidance and terminology for environmental engineering in equipment

Implementing SIST EN 300 019-1-6, alongside these references, ensures robust, reliable telecommunications infrastructure suited for diverse and demanding maritime conditions.

air/watervapourmixture
non-weatherprotected location: location at which the equipment is not protected from direct weather influences

4 Environmental classes
4.1 Class 6.1: totally weatherprotected locations
This class is a combination of classes 6K1/6B1/6C1/6S1/6M3 in IEC 60721-3-6 [1].
This class applies to equipment installed in totally weatherprotected, heated and ventilated locations following warm-up
on board engine-powered vessels but excluding refrigerated cargo spaces, machinery spaces and locations containing
equipment dissipating considerable amounts of heat. This class does not cover Warm Damp and Warm Damp Equable
climates.
NOTE: Climatic conditions for different areas are defined in IEC 60721-2-1 [2].
This class applies to:
- equipment which is not exposed to heat radiation from adjacent equipment, heating elements or to solar radiation
through glass or transparent materials;
- installations on board vessels operating in areas without particular risk of attack by flora or fauna. It also covers
other vessels where the installations are located in compartments of such construction that mould growth and
attacks by animals are unlikely;
- totally weatherprotecte
