Overview
SIST ETS 300 097-2:1996 sets out a standardized Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma for the Connected Line Identification Presentation (COLP) supplementary service within Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) environments. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST) based on ETSI standards, this part focuses on ensuring ISDN equipment and supplementary services are implemented in conformance with the Digital Subscriber Signalling System No. one (DSS1) protocol, specifically at the user-network interface layer 3.
The document provides a uniform approach for manufacturers and service providers to specify, document, and demonstrate conformance with essential protocol requirements, as defined for ISDN COLP. The PICS proforma is a fundamental tool within the ISDN standardization and certification processes, supporting effective interoperability and quality assurance in pan-European telecommunications networks.
Key Topics
Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS):
- A PICS is a formal questionnaire that itemizes each protocol capability and option, allowing implementers to indicate which features their product supports.
- The proforma follows the guidelines of ISO/IEC 9646, ensuring an internationally recognized framework for protocol conformance.
COLP Supplementary Service:
- COLP enables presentation of the connected party’s line identification to a calling party over an ISDN network, supporting transparency and feature-rich communication.
- The standard covers both user-side and network-side roles with separate sections for each.
User-Network Interface (UNI) and DSS1 Protocol:
- Focus on conformance at the key UNI reference points as defined by ITU-T Rec. I.411.
- Specifies the requirements and supported configurations for ISDN signaling protocols between subscriber equipment and public telecom networks.
Conformance Criteria and Role Definition:
- Details conformance requirements, including mandatory and optional features.
- Distinguishes requirements for user, network interfaces, subsidiary capabilities, protocol data units, parameter values, and special arrangements.
Applications
Practical uses and value of SIST ETS 300 097-2:1996 include:
ISDN Equipment Certification:
- Manufacturers complete the PICS proforma to declare which aspects of COLP supplementary service are supported by their devices or systems (e.g. PBXs, terminals).
- Facilitates regulatory approval and market entry for ISDN products in Europe.
Interoperability Assessment:
- Network operators and integrators use the PICS to ensure all participating systems support the required protocol elements for COLP, minimizing risks in multi-vendor environments.
Conformance Testing and Integration:
- Serves as the basis for the development of Interoperability Test Suites (ATS) and supplementary test documentation (PIXIT).
- Provides clear documentation for vendors and customers, streamlining acceptance and maintenance processes.
Network Planning and Service Roll-out:
- Assists telecom engineers in planning new ISDN services or upgrades, ensuring compatibility at critical interface points.
Related Standards
The effectiveness and completeness of SIST ETS 300 097-2:1996 depend on reference to additional standards:
- ETS 300 097-1: Protocol specification for COLP supplementary service using DSS1.
- ETS 300 102-1: ISDN user-network interface layer 3 specifications for basic call control.
- ETS 300 195-1/-2: Supplementary service interaction specifications and corresponding PICS for DSS1.
- I-ETS 300 314/315: PICS for DSS1 protocol for basic circuit-mode call control.
- ISO/IEC 9646 series: International framework for OSI protocol conformance testing and statement formats.
Key ISDN and DSS1 protocol terms: ISDN, DSS1, COLP, PICS, UNI, supplementary services, conformance, telecommunication standards, protocol testing.
By providing a structured and internationally recognized conformance statement format, SIST ETS 300 097-2:1996 is fundamental to ISDN protocol harmonization, interoperability, and high-quality network service delivery across Europe and beyond.

implementation.PSIST ETS 300 097-2:1996

The PICS/SCS subclause shoulddescribe the relationship of the PICS to the SCS.A.1.2Global statement of conformanceIf the answer to the statement in this subclause is "Yes", all subsequent subclauses should be completedto facilitate selection of test cases for optional functions. If the answer to the statement in this subclause is "No", all subsequent subclauses should be completed, and all non-supported mandatory capabilities should be identified and explained. Explanations may beentered in the comments field at the bottom of each table or on attached sheets of paper.A.1.3Explanation of PICS proforma subclausesThe PICS proforma contains a Roles clause and thereafter is presented in two parts (for user andnetwork) with the following subclauses, as required:-major capabilities;-subsidiary capabilities;-protocol data unit support;-protocol data unit parameters;-timers;-call states. The User clause shall only be completed for user implementations (including private networkimplementations) while the Network clause shall only be completed for network implementations. TheRoles subclause shall be completed for all implementations. The relationship between this PICS proforma and other related PICS proforma (e.g. the basic call PICSproforma) is expressed in the Requirements List (RL) contained in annex B. This provides the additionalrestrictions placed on the related proforma (different conditions, different status, etc.).PSIST ETS 300 097-2:1996

Note, however, that a reference merely indicates theplace where the core of a description of an item can be found. Any additional information contained inETS 300 097-1 [1] has to be taken into account when making a statement about the conformance of thatparticular item. The following common notations, defined in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [8], are used for the status column:MmandatoryOoptionalN/Anot applicableO.for mutually exclusive or selectable options from a setThe following common notations, defined in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [8], are used for the support column:Yfor supported/implementedNfor not supported/not implementedA.2Identification of the implementationA.2.1Implementation Under Test (IUT) identificationIUT name:.
