Overview
kSIST FprEN IEC 60794-1-125:2026 is an international standard developed by CLC and the IEC for optical fibre cables. It specifies method E25, a ripcord functional test method. This document forms part of a comprehensive series for optical fibre cable test procedures, focusing on mechanical testing to ensure product quality and operational reliability. Ripcords are vital elements in optical cable construction, designed to allow easy and safe access to cable cores during installation and maintenance.
Ensuring that ripcords function as intended is essential to protecting cable integrity and supporting efficient on-site processes. This standard provides a clear, repeatable procedure for assessing ripcord performance under specified conditions.
Key Topics
Ripcord Functional Test (Method E25):
Method E25 defines the procedure for determining the suitability of a ripcord in opening an optical fibre cable sheath without breaking.Sample Requirements:
The test requires cable samples of a specific minimum length, accounting for construction type and ensuring accurate results.Testing Apparatus:
The use of a climatic chamber for temperature control and standard cable preparation tools.Test Procedure:
- Preparing the cable by exposing the ripcord.
- Conditioning the sample at specified temperatures (covering typical installation extremes).
- Performing a controlled rip to assess the ripcord’s capability to open the cable sheath efficiently.
Performance Requirements:
The ripcord must successfully slit the sheath across a defined length without breaking. Additional follow-up samples may be tested in the event of initial failure.Reporting Details:
Test results should document:- Testing conditions
- Cable and ripcord materials
- Number of samples
- Measured outcomes
Applications
Optical Fibre Cable Manufacturing:
Quality assurance teams in cable manufacturing use this test to verify ripcord function, ensuring cables can be safely and efficiently accessed in the field.Installation and Maintenance:
Network installers and service providers rely on cables conforming to this standard for safer, easier and more reliable sheath removal, minimizing cable damage risk.Product Development and Compliance:
Manufacturers use these procedures for design verification, regulatory compliance, and market assurance, confirming their optical fibre cables meet international mechanical performance standards.

17 FOREWORD
18 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
19 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
20 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
21 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
22 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
23 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
24 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
25 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
26 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
27 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
28 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
29 interested IEC National Committees.
30 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
31 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
32 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
33 misinterpretation by any end user.
34 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
35 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
36 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
37 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
38 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
39 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
40 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
41 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
42 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
43 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
44 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
45 Publications.
46 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
47 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
