Abstract

Equipment performance characteristics and parameters necessary to facilitate coexistence between broadband Multimedia Wireless Systems (MWS) in either; adjacent frequency assignments in the same geographical area. or co-frequency assignments in neighbouring geographical areas.  Multimedia Wireless Systems are defined  as terrestrial multipoint systems which have their origin in telecommunication and/or broadcasting, and which provide fixed wireless access direct to the end user for  multimedia services. These MWS systems may offer different degrees of interactivity. Therefore systems are anticipated that could deliver services requiring either asymmetric data rates, (including uni-directional distribution systems) or symmetric data rates between uplink and downlink. Any asymmetry between uplink and downlink may be fixed or dynamically variable to suit the traffic characteristics at any time.  This standard covers equipments that operate within the frequency band 40.5 to 43.5 GHz.

Overview

SIST EN 301 997-1 V1.1.1:2003 defines the general requirements for multipoint radio equipment used in Multimedia Wireless Systems (MWS) operating within the 40.5 GHz to 43.5 GHz frequency band. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), this standard addresses performance characteristics and essential parameters needed to ensure coexistence between broadband MWS in adjacent frequency assignments within the same area, or in co-frequency assignments across neighboring geographical areas. Designed primarily for fixed wireless access, these systems facilitate multimedia services-ranging from telecommunications to broadcasting-with varying levels of interactivity and support both asymmetric and symmetric data rates.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Outlines the minimum requirements for system and equipment parameters necessary for effective planning, deployment, and coexistence of MWS in the designated frequency band.
  • System Architecture: Describes a multipoint (MP) topology, including Central Stations (CS), Terminal Stations (TS), Repeater Stations (RS), and the interfaces that interconnect them.
  • Frequency Management: Specifies the use of block-based frequency assignment, accommodating both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) systems, as well as flexible channel arrangements to facilitate diverse deployment strategies.
  • Environmental Conditions: Details requirements for equipment operation in both weather-protected (indoor) and non-weather-protected (outdoor) environments, referencing standard classes for robustness.
  • Power Supply and EMC: Establishes conformity with relevant standards to ensure electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Synchronization: Stipulates the need for internal and external synchronization to the network for certain digital services, promoting efficient and reliable communication.
  • Antenna Specifications: Addresses requirements for directional, sectorial, and omni-directional antennas, aiming at optimized network configurations.

Applications

Multimedia Wireless Systems (MWS) as referenced in this standard have a wide range of practical applications in modern telecommunications:

  • Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (FWA): Providing high-speed internet and data services directly to end-users, particularly in areas where wired infrastructure is infeasible or cost-prohibitive.
  • Telecommunications Networks: Enabling operators to deliver both point-to-multipoint and multipoint-to-multipoint voice, data, and video services utilizing the 40 GHz band.
  • Broadcasting: Supporting digital multimedia broadcasting, such as video distribution and other entertainment services.
  • Enterprise Connectivity: Facilitating private wireless networks for business campuses or industrial sites with secure, high-capacity connections.
  • Flexible Service Offerings: Allowing implementation of both symmetric and asymmetric data channels, which is essential for adapting to evolving user demands and traffic characteristics.

These systems are configured to handle dynamic requirements, from unidirectional distribution to fully interactive multimedia services, ensuring adaptability in diverse deployment scenarios.

Related Standards

Compliance with SIST EN 301 997-1 V1.1.1:2003 relies on or relates to various international and European standards, ensuring interoperability and consistent quality:

  • EN 301 997-2: Covers essential requirements under applicable EU directives.
  • EN 301 215-3: Specifies antenna requirements for point-to-multipoint radio systems within the same frequency band.
  • EN 300 019: Describes environmental conditions and test procedures for telecommunications equipment.
  • EN 301 489: Addresses electromagnetic compatibility requirements for radio equipment.
  • CEPT/ERC/DEC(99)15: Establishes the harmonized frequency band and regulatory framework for MWS introduction in Europe.
  • ITU-T and ITU-R Recommendations: Provide definitions, synchronization guidance, and network interface specifications (e.g., G.810, F.1499).
  • IEEE 802.16: Offers technical foundations for broadband wireless access systems.

By aligning with these references, SIST EN 301 997-1 V1.1.1:2003 supports the robust, harmonized deployment of multimedia wireless access solutions throughout Europe and beyond.

SIST EN 301 997-1 V1.1.1:2003 is a standard published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST). Its full title is "Transmission and Multiplexing (TM); Multipoint equipment; Radio Equipment for use in Multimedia Wireless Systems (MWS) in the frequency band 40,5 GHz to 43,5 GHz; Part 1: General requirements". This standard covers: Equipment performance characteristics and parameters necessary to facilitate coexistence between broadband Multimedia Wireless Systems (MWS) in either; adjacent frequency assignments in the same geographical area. or co-frequency assignments in neighbouring geographical areas. Multimedia Wireless Systems are defined as terrestrial multipoint systems which have their origin in telecommunication and/or broadcasting, and which provide fixed wireless access direct to the end user for multimedia services.
