Overview
SIST ETS 300 702-1:1998 defines the Profile Test Specification (PTS) summary for evaluating the conformance of equipment to the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) / Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) Interworking Profile (IWP). The standard, developed by SIST and aligned with ETSI, consolidates all references and requirements necessary for testing whether products meet the interoperability criteria between DECT and GSM technologies.
This standard is essential for manufacturers and testing bodies aiming to validate the interoperability of radio equipment that supports both DECT and GSM profiles. Conformance testing is structured around established specifications for the DECT Common Interface (CI), with specific test references covering the key protocol layers: Physical Layer (PHL), Medium Access Control (MAC), Data Link Control (DLC), and Network Layer (NWK).
Key Topics
- DECT and GSM Interworking
- Ensures that equipment can operate reliably at the interface of DECT and GSM networks.
- Test Coverage across Protocol Layers
- Physical Layer (PHL): Tests for terminal attachment and basic telephony.
- MAC Layer: Verifies signaling, connections, handover, paging, encryption, and quality control.
- DLC Layer: Examines data link integrity, ciphering, frame use, and service access.
- NWK Layer: Focuses on voice services, call control, mobility management, and link control.
- Framework and Terminology
- Incorporates reference to ISO/IEC 9646 standards for conformance testing methodology.
- Adopts consistent use of PICS (Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement), ATS (Abstract Test Suite), TSS & TP (Test Suite Structure and Test Purposes), and IXIT (Implementation eXtra Information for Testing) proformas.
- Modular Testing Approach
- Segregates testing requirements for Portable radio Termination (PT) and Fixed radio Termination (FT) for precise validation.
- Reference Backing
- The PTS leverages GAP test specifications and the DECT CI Testing Case Library for comprehensive coverage.
Applications
The DECT/GSM Interworking Profile Test Specification is critical for:
- Equipment Manufacturers
- Ensuring that their multi-standard cordless telecommunication devices comply with interoperability profiles, thus paving the way for cross-network functionality.
- Conformance Testing Laboratories
- Providing a standardized process for certifying equipment against DECT/GSM IWP requirements, essential for market acceptance and regulatory approval.
- Network Operators
- Verifying that deployed devices will function seamlessly in mixed DECT/GSM environments, enhancing user experience and service reliability.
- Product Development and Certification
- Supporting structured development workflows where early verification checks can be performed during hardware and firmware design, reducing time-to-market and post-launch issues.
Related Standards
