Overview
SIST EN 1034-13:2006+A1:2010 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies safety requirements for the design and construction of machines used for de-wiring bales and units in the paper industry. This standard is a specialized part of the broader EN 1034 series, focusing on hazards, hazardous situations, and hazard events associated with machinery that removes wires from bales or units of cellulose or paper. Designed to be used together with EN 1034-1:2000+A1:2010, it provides comprehensive measures to minimize occupational risks, enhance machine safety, and ensure operator protection during the mechanical de-wiring process. The standard is not applicable to hand-held devices or equipment manufactured before the date of publication.
Key Topics
- Significant Hazards: Covers mechanical hazards (crushing, shearing, cutting, entanglement, drawing-in and trapping), electrical hazards, noise-induced risks, ergonomic considerations, and functional safety risks related to equipment failure or improper use.
- Safety Requirements:
- Use of fixed and interlocking guards to prevent access to dangerous zones.
- Implementation of start-up warning devices and emergency stop systems.
- Energy isolation, prevention of unexpected start-up, and clear instructions for safe maintenance and cleaning.
- Specific requirements for loading conveyors, de-wiring devices, wire ejection devices, and positioning equipment.
- Operator Protection: Provides guidelines for integrated lighting, safe working platforms, ergonomic operation, and the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection, safety shoes, and hearing protection.
- Compliance: Aligns with key sections of EN 1034-1 and relevant standards on machine safety, guarding, control systems, and electrical/hydraulic equipment.
Applications
Machines for de-wiring bales and units are vital in the paper manufacturing and finishing industry. Typical uses include:
- Cellulose and Paper Bale Preparation: Automatically removes wires from bales before further processing or transport.
- Material Recycling Facilities: Essential wherever safe, efficient bale opening is required.
- Integrated Production Lines: Improves operational safety and efficiency, especially in automated environments.
- Maintenance and Cleaning: The standard ensures machinery is designed for safe maintenance, describing clear protocols to lower the risk of accidents during necessary interventions.
Implementing SIST EN 1034-13:2006+A1:2010 helps manufacturers and users of de-wiring machinery meet legal and regulatory requirements under EU Machinery Directives, reduce workplace injuries, and foster a safer working environment.
Related Standards
For full compliance and comprehensive machine safety, reference the following standards in tandem with SIST EN 1034-13:2006+A1:2010:
- EN 1034-1:2000+A1:2010 - Common safety requirements for paper making and finishing machines.
- EN 294:1992 - Safety distances to prevent danger zones being reached by upper limbs.
- EN 418:1992 - Functional aspects and design principles of emergency stop equipment.
- EN 953:1997 - Requirements for the design and construction of fixed and movable guards.
- EN 60204-1:1997 - General requirements for electrical equipment of machines.
- EN ISO 12100-1 and -2:2003 - Basic concepts and general safety principles for machine design.
Conclusion
By adhering to SIST EN 1034-13:2006+A1:2010, machine designers, manufacturers, and end-users in the paper industry ensure that de-wiring machinery meets rigorous safety requirements, minimizes hazards, and promotes compliance with European directives. Integrating this standard not only protects personnel but also enhances operational reliability and efficiency in paper manufacturing and finishing processes.
