Overview

SIST EN 301 002-3 V1.1.4:2005 defines the Test Suite Structure and Test Purposes (TSS&TP) for the user side of the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) using the Digital Subscriber Signalling System No. one (DSS1) protocol and Security tools (SET) procedures. This standard is an essential part of conformance testing for ISDN security services and supplementary service interactions at the user interface, ensuring interoperability and compliance with pan-European telecommunication requirements.

The document is part of a comprehensive standardization series addressing diverse aspects of ISDN security and signaling. Conformance to this standard enables reliable implementation, testing, and deployment of secure ISDN services across networks and devices.

Key Topics

  • Test Suite Structure (TSS):
The standard specifies the organization of test groups and cases, covering signalling procedures at S and T reference points for user access and interworking with private ISDNs.

  • Test Purposes (TP):

    • Definition and structure for each test requirement.
    • Coverage includes registration and management of Personal Identification Numbers (PIN), notification of possible fraudulent use (using PIN or Transaction Number (TAN)), and response behavior for specific protocol states.
    • Clear naming conventions and reference criteria, aligned with the implementation under test (IUT) and supported features.
  • Conformance Testing Methodology:

    • Test purposes address externally observable behaviors associated with the DSS1 protocol, as required by EN 301 002-1.
    • Emphasis on compliance with internationally recognized testing frameworks such as ISO/IEC 9646.
  • Selection and Execution Criteria:

    • Guidance for including or excluding test cases depending on equipment configuration and PICS (Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement) options.
    • All mandatory test purposes must be covered unless considered untestable by the chosen Abstract Test Method (ATM).

Applications

Practical applications of SIST EN 301 002-3 V1.1.4:2005 include:

  • ISDN Equipment Testing:

    • Testing ISDN terminals and network components for conformity to security procedures and signaling requirements.
    • Ensuring consistent and reliable handling of registration, PIN modification, and fraudulent use notifications at the user interface.
  • Product Certification:

    • Providing a recognized framework for third-party certification of ISDN devices and services, helping vendors gain market acceptance and regulatory clearance.
  • Network Interoperability:

    • Facilitating secure interworking between public and private ISDN networks.
    • Supporting customer-specific security services with robust signaling validation.
  • Quality Assurance:

    • Enabling manufacturers and operators to detect and resolve protocol implementation errors before deployment.

Key stakeholders for this standard include telecommunications equipment manufacturers, service providers, test laboratories, and regulatory authorities.

Related Standards

The strength of SIST EN 301 002-3 V1.1.4:2005 lies in its integration within a wider ISDN security and protocol testing framework. Related standards include:

  • EN 301 002-1: Protocol specification for ISDN SET procedures with DSS1.
  • EN 301 002-2: Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma specification.
  • EN 301 002-4 and EN 301 002-6: Abstract Test Suite (ATS) and PIXIT proforma specifications for both user and network sides.
  • EN 300 196-1: Generic functional protocol for supplementary services over DSS1.
  • EN 301 132: Security tools for use within telecommunication services.
  • ISO/IEC 9646 Series: Conformance testing methodology and framework for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocols.
  • ITU-T Recommendations I.411 and Q.931: ISDN user-network interfaces and signaling specifications.

Implementing SIST EN 301 002-3 V1.1.4:2005 ensures a globally recognized approach to ISDN security protocol conformance and enhances the quality and security of digital telecommunications services.
