Overview

SIST ETS 300 262 E1:2003 specifies the service description for the syntax-based Videotex teleservice within the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) environment, as implemented by public European telecommunications operators. The standard establishes the stage one, user-oriented overview for Videotex services over ISDN, defining the core service principles, access, and interworking requirements. By standardizing service procedures, this document enhances interoperability for digital communications platforms, supporting the delivery of interactive Videotex content across both public and private ISDNs.

Key focus areas include connection establishment, service access options, communication modes (circuit and packet), interworking with legacy and mobile networks, and compatibility with related ISDN services. This standard is instrumental for service providers, telecom operators, and manufacturers developing interactive, database-driven applications over ISDN infrastructures.

Key Topics

  • ISDN Videotex Teleservice: Describes the interactive, syntax-based Videotex teleservice, enabling communication between end-users and computer-based applications or databases via ISDN networks.
  • Service Access and Provisioning: Outlines how users subscribe to and access the service, including options for information channels and call handling per ISDN interface.
  • Communication Procedures: Details call establishment, information exchange, and termination processes in both circuit and packet mode environments.
  • Interworking Requirements: Provides guidance for seamless interaction between public ISDN, private ISDNs, non-ISDN networks such as the Public Switched Packet Data Network (PSPDN), and GSM networks.
  • Service Attributes: Defines key information transfer, access, and high layer attributes, establishing baseline behavior for compatible Videotex terminal equipment.
  • Error Handling and Network Indications: Addresses signalling and network feedback for normal and exceptional service scenarios, ensuring consistent user experience.

Applications

The syntax-based Videotex teleservice over ISDN is applied in various domains:

  • Interactive Information Services: Facilitates user access to multimedia databases for applications such as online directories, banking, resource booking, and government services.
  • Business Communications: Enables companies to deploy interactive customer service portals, ordering systems, and data retrieval interfaces using standardized ISDN connections.
  • Telecommunications Equipment Development: Provides manufacturers with a framework to ensure Videotex-compatible terminals and gateways support consistent service access and interworking features.
  • Network Integration: Supports service providers in upgrading or migrating legacy Videotex services to digital ISDN environments, maintaining compatibility across public, private, and mobile access networks.
  • Interoperability Assurance: Ensures multi-vendor and multi-operator environments can communicate using shared procedures, promoting wider adoption of open, interactive network services.

Related Standards

This standard references a set of international recommendations and related documents crucial for ISDN Videotex implementations:

  • CCITT Recommendation I.130: Methodology for characterizing telecommunication services on ISDN.
  • CCITT Recommendation F.300: Defines the general principles of Videotex services.
  • ETS 300 079 / ETS 300 223: Specify end-to-end protocols for Videotex over circuit or packet mode ISDN.
  • ETS 300 080 / ETS 300 218: Describe the lower-layer protocols for Videotex over circuit and packet mode ISDN.
  • ETS 300 102 / ETS 300 125: Address user-network interface specifications for ISDN call control and data link layers.
  • ETSI-GSM Technical Specification GSM 03.43: Provides guidelines for Videotex service realization over GSM networks.

For effective ISDN Videotex service deployment and interworking, reference to these documents is recommended to ensure comprehensive compliance and optimal network performance.

By following SIST ETS 300 262 E1:2003, organizations enhance the consistency, reliability, and reach of interactive Videotex services over modern digital networks. The standard serves as a cornerstone for enabling secure, interoperable, and user-focused ISDN services in both public and private telecommunication environments.

Foreword
This European Telecommunication Standard (ETS) has been produced by the Terminal Equipment (TE)
Technical Committee of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). This ETS has
been approved by the Network Aspects (NA) Technical Committee of ETSI.
This ETS defines the stage one of the syntax-based Videotex teleservice for the pan-European Integrated
Services Digital Network (ISDN) as provided by European public telecommunications operators. A
Videotex teleservice is an interactive teleservice which provides, through appropriate access by
standardised procedures, users of Videotex terminals the ability to communicate with databases and other
computer based applications via telecommunications networks.

1 Scope
This standard defines the stage one of the syntax-based Videotex teleservice for the pan-European
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) as provided by European public telecommunications
operators. Stage one is an overall service description from the user's point of view (see CCITT
Recommendation I.130 [1]), but does not deal with the details of the human interface itself.
This standard defines the interworking requirements of private ISDNs with the public ISDN.
In addition this standard specifies the base functionality where the service is provided to the user via a
private ISDN.
This standard does not specify the additional requirements where the service is provided to the user via a
telecommunications network that is not an ISDN but does include interworking requirements of other
networks with the public ISDN.
Charging principles are outside the scope of this standard.
The values of the general attributes are outside the scope of this standard.
A Videotex teleservice is an interactive teleservice which provides, through appropriate access by
standardised procedures, users of Videotex terminals the ability to communicate with databases and other
computer based applications via telecommunications networks.
This standard is applicable to the stage three standards for the syntax-based Videotex teleservice. The
term "stage three" is also defined in CCITT Recommendation I.130 [1]. Where the text indicates the status
of a requirement, i.e. as strict command or prohibition, as authorisation leaving freedom, as a capability or
possibility, this shall be reflected in the text of the relevant stage three standard.
Furthermore, conformance to this standard is met by conforming to the stage three standards with the
field of application appropriate to the equipment being implemented. Therefore no method of testing is
provided for this standard.
2 Normative references
This standard incorporates by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. These
normative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text and the publications are listed
hereafter. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of any of these publications
apply to this standard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references the
