Overview
SIST EN ISO 24343-1:2012 specifies a standardized method for determining the residual indentation in resilient and laminate floor coverings following the application and removal of a constant load. Developed by CEN and technically equivalent to ISO 24343-1:2007, this standard is vital for manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and specifiers seeking to objectively evaluate the recovery properties of floor materials. By following a clearly defined procedure, the standard enables consistent, reproducible measurement of a floor covering's ability to withstand static loads and recover its original thickness.
Key Topics
- Residual Indentation Measurement: Defines “residual indentation” as the difference between the original and post-loading thickness of a floor covering specimen.
- Test Methodology: Outlines procedures for conditioning, loading, and measuring resilient and laminate floor samples under controlled laboratory conditions.
- Test Apparatus: Specifies the necessary equipment, such as cylindrical indenters, rigid platforms, comparators, and weights for uniform testing.
- Sample Preparation: Offers guidance on specimen selection, sample dimensions, and marking measurement locations to ensure accurate, repeatable results.
- Reporting Requirements: Details mandatory information for test reports, including product identification, mean test results, and any deviations from the standard method.
- Precision and Reproducibility: Addresses the importance of reproducible results to support industry-wide quality assurance and product comparison.
Applications
The consistent evaluation provided by SIST EN ISO 24343-1:2012 is widely leveraged in the following areas:
- Product Development: Assists manufacturers in optimizing resilient and laminate flooring for improved indentation resistance and durability.
- Quality Control: Supports ongoing production checks to ensure floor coverings meet industry performance expectations.
- Specification and Procurement: Helps architects, designers, and procurement professionals select appropriate flooring solutions based on objective indentation recovery data.
- Market Access: Facilitates compliance with European and international requirements, aiding market access and competitive positioning of flooring products.
- Performance Claims: Provides third-party verifiable data to substantiate performance specifications and marketing claims regarding floor covering durability.
Related Standards
- EN 433: Predecessor standard focused on the determination of residual indentation for resilient floor coverings, superseded by the current ISO-based method.
- ISO 24343-2 (planned): Will address short-term indentation, complementing the residual indentation scope of Part 1.
- Other Flooring Standards: Related standards developed under ISO/TC 219 and CEN/TC 134 address additional performance and durability criteria for floor coverings.
SIST EN ISO 24343-1:2012 is essential for anyone involved in the design, production, or quality assurance of resilient or laminate flooring. It establishes a clear, reproducible process for assessing the resilience of floor coverings under load, supporting product reliability, regulatory compliance, and informed material selection in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. For laboratories and manufacturers seeking to maintain or demonstrate high standards, following SIST EN ISO 24343-1:2012 ensures reliable evaluation of indentation performance.
