Overview

SIST EN ISO 24157:2008/A1:2020, titled Ophthalmic optics and instruments – Reporting aberrations of the human eye – Amendment 1 (ISO 24157:2008/Amd 1:2020), is an internationally recognized amendment developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) in collaboration with ISO. This standard focuses on updating and clarifying the methods for reporting aberrations of the human eye, which are crucial in ophthalmic optics and instrumentation. The amendment ensures greater consistency and accuracy in the reporting processes, supporting advancements in eye care and optical instrument development.

Key Topics

The amendment addresses specific terminology, notations, and data reporting methods relevant to aberrations in the human eye:

  • Terminological Clarification: Redefinition of key terms such as "line of sight" to align with current scientific understanding. The updated definition distinguishes the path from the fixation point to the eye's entrance pupil and its continuation to the retina.
  • Standardized Notation: Incorporation of parameters and symbols for reporting, such as the number of sample points, to improve data consistency.
  • Technical Updates: Revisions to tabular data and mathematical expressions that detail how wavefront aberrations and Zernike polynomial coefficients are described.
  • Harmonization: Alignment with related international terminology and normative references, ensuring cohesive reporting across borders and systems.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 24157:2008/A1:2020 is highly relevant in ophthalmology, clinical practice, and optical manufacturing. Key practical applications include:

  • Eye Examination and Diagnostics: Provides standard guidelines for eye care professionals to assess and document aberrations of the eye during comprehensive vision tests.
  • Instrument Development: Supports manufacturers in calibrating and verifying ophthalmic devices such as aberrometers, wavefront analyzers, and diagnostic imaging equipment, ensuring measurements are accurate and reproducible.
  • Research and Development: Facilitates consistent data reporting in clinical research studies, benefiting comparative analysis and peer-reviewed publication.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensures that optical lenses, surgical devices, and corrective procedures are based on standardized aberration data, enhancing patient safety and product performance.

Related Standards

  • ISO 13666:2019: Provides terminology specifically for ophthalmic optics, including updated definitions referenced in this amendment.
  • EN ISO 24157:2008: The foundational standard amended by SIST EN ISO 24157:2008/A1:2020, specifying general procedures for reporting ocular aberrations.
  • ISO/TC 172 and CEN/TC 170 standards: Other technical specifications and methods in the fields of optics, photonics, and ophthalmology, relevant for comprehensive quality management in eye care technologies.

Conclusion

SIST EN ISO 24157:2008/A1:2020 delivers vital enhancements to the standardized reporting of human eye aberrations, benefiting ophthalmic professionals, equipment manufacturers, and researchers. By promoting uniformity in data interpretation and communication, this amendment supports safe, effective, and innovative eye care practices across Europe and worldwide.
