Overview

SIST EN 301 062-1 V1.2.3:2005 specifies the protocol extensions required to support Virtual Private Network (VPN) applications within Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) environments using Signalling System No. 7 (SS7). The standard outlines how VPNs can be supported with Private network Q reference point Signalling System number 1 (PSS1) information flows over public Network Node Interface (NNI) protocols, notably ISUP and Transaction Capabilities (TC). It incorporates and modifies the ITU-T Recommendations Q.765.1 and Q.699.1 to better address European needs and interoperability.

The document provides foundational guidance for telecom operators and solution providers to achieve seamless connectivity between public and private ISDN-based networks, enabling secure, reliable, and efficient VPN service delivery.

Key Topics

  • ISDN and SS7 Integration: Details the extension of SS7 protocols, including ISUP (ISDN User Part) and TC (Transaction Capabilities), to facilitate VPN applications.
  • PSS1 Information Flows: Defines mechanisms for transparent transfer of PSS1 information between Private Integrated Network eXchanges (PINX) over public interfaces.
  • Public and Private Network Interworking: Specifies interworking functions between public SS7 and private network protocols (DSS1 and PSS1), supporting seamless VPN service delivery.
  • Application Transport Mechanism (APM): Utilizes APM for bearer-related signalling, enabling better support for ISDN bearer services in VPN use cases.
  • Network Options: Summarizes supported configurations, including gateway functionality, continuation of calls without application association, and relocation of gateway functions.
  • Relay Node Concept: Introduces "Relay node" to forward signalling information between network domains, ensuring continuity and transparency of services.
  • Protocol Reference and Alignment: Modifies references and terminology to align with European standards and interoperability requirements.

Applications

SIST EN 301 062-1 V1.2.3:2005 is vital for organizations and service providers looking to implement or enhance VPN capabilities within ISDN infrastructures. Practical applications include:

  • Enterprise VPNs: Facilitating secure communications for distributed organizations, allowing multiple corporate sites to operate as a single virtual network over public ISDN infrastructure.
  • Telecommunications Providers: Enabling operators to offer flexible, standards-based VPN services to enterprise customers with guaranteed interoperability and transparent service delivery.
  • Multi-vendor Environments: Supporting the integration of equipment from different vendors, ensuring consistent protocol behaviour and service reliability across heterogeneous ISDN networks.
  • Migration and Interworking: Easing the transition from legacy private network protocols to advanced SS7-based VPN solutions, while maintaining support for supplementary and basic ISDN services.
  • Supplementary Services Support: Enhancing services such as call forwarding, conferencing, and call transfer within a VPN environment leveraging ISDN signalling standards.

Related Standards

For comprehensive ISDN VPN implementation, the following standards and recommendations should be referenced alongside SIST EN 301 062-1:

  • ISO/IEC 11574: Defines service descriptions, functional capabilities, and information flows for Private Integrated Services Networks (PISN).
  • ISO/IEC 11572 & 11582: Specify inter-exchange signalling procedures and protocols for circuit-mode bearer services and supplementary services.
  • EN 301 060-1 / EN 301 061-1: Protocol specifications for DSS1 in VPN applications.
  • EN 301 069-1: Protocol specification for ISUP Application Transport Mechanism (APM).
  • ETS 300 899: Interworking specification between ISUP and DSS1 protocols.
  • ITU-T Recommendations Q.765.1 and Q.699.1: International references for protocol requirements in SS7 and VPN scenarios.
  • EN 300 356-1, ETS 300 009, ETS 300 121, ETS 300 134: Further relevant ISDN and SS7 protocol standards.

By leveraging these standards, network operators and equipment manufacturers ensure interoperability, reliability, and compliance when deploying advanced VPN solutions over ISDN networks.

Scope
The present document describes the extensions required for the support of Virtual Private Network (VPN) applications
over the public Network Node Interface (NNI). This application makes use of the Application Transport Mechanism
(APM) described in EN 301 069-1 for bearer related signalling, and the Transaction Capability (TC) for signalling
involving no bearer. The present document specifies the respective users (i.e. APM-user, TC-user) to support the PSS1
information flows continuity in VPN applications (Transparent transfer of PSS1 information flows between PINX
entities). The public NNI provides transparency to the services of the private network.
The private network functionality is defined by ISO in its series of standards for Private Integrated Services Network
(PISN). In addition, the concept of a "Relay node" is introduced by the present document.
The present document provides for a number of network options. These are summarized in table 1.
