Overview

SIST EN 13630-4:2025, published by CEN, defines a test method to verify the insensitiveness to impact of detonating cords used in civil applications. This European Standard is critical for ensuring the safety and reliability of detonating cords during handling, transport, and storage. The purpose of the assessment is to minimize accidental initiation resulting from impact, thereby supporting regulatory compliance and operational safety. Note that this standard specifically does not apply to safety fuses.

Compliance with SIST EN 13630-4:2025 also facilitates adherence to the essential safety requirements of Directive 2014/28/EU regarding the placing on the market and supervision of civil-use explosives.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Specifies methods for verifying the insensitiveness to impact of detonating cords for civil uses, excluding safety fuses.
  • Test Principle: A series of detonating cord specimens are subjected to a standardized impact generated by a specified drop hammer apparatus. Successful verification is achieved if none of the test samples detonate under impact.
  • Equipment: The procedure involves specialized apparatus, including a drop hammer, calibrated weights, steel anvils, and environmental control devices such as thermometers and hygrometers.
  • Sample Preparation: Requires the sealing of test sample ends to prevent leakage or ingress of humidity, ensuring test integrity.
  • Procedure: The test is conducted under controlled temperature and humidity conditions, following strict safety protocols. If any sample explodes during testing, the result is recorded as a failure.
  • Reporting: Mandates comprehensive documentation of test conditions, sample identification, environmental data, and a pass/fail result.

Applications

  • Industrial Explosives Manufacturing: Assists manufacturers of detonating cords in verifying product safety prior to distribution, helping ensure compliance with EU legislative requirements for explosives.
  • Quality Assurance Testing: Supports laboratory testing and quality control programs by defining standardized impact sensitivity methodologies and result criteria.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Enables organizations to demonstrate conformity with Directive 2014/28/EU, which governs the marketing and oversight of civil-use explosives within the European Economic Area.
  • Safe Handling and Transportation: Contributes to safer logistics chains by ensuring the detonating cords possess a verified resistance to accidental impact-triggered initiation.

Related Standards

  • EN 13630-1:2025 - Explosives for civil uses - Detonating cords and safety fuses - Part 1: Requirements
Provides fundamental requirements for detonating cords and safety fuses used in civil applications.

  • EN 13857-1:2025 - Explosives for civil uses - Part 1: Vocabulary
Contains relevant terminology and definitions that support consistent interpretation of SIST EN 13630-4:2025.

  • EN ISO 4957:2018 - Tool steels (ISO 4957:2018)
Specifies the steel grades required for test apparatus used in impact testing.

  • EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 - General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories
Standard for competence in testing environments, referenced for laboratory quality and procedures.

By following SIST EN 13630-4:2025, organizations can enhance the safety and quality of detonating cords for civil uses, drive compliance with EU directives, and improve best practices in the handling and testing of explosives. This standard is indispensable for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory authorities involved in the explosives industry.
