General Information

Abstract

Deals with measurements on diversity equipment used for making two or more receivers at a radio-relay station suitable for diversity reception. Diversity equipment is assumed to comprise the circuit for switching and/or combining the diversity channels, excluding the diversity channel equipment itself i.e. transmitters, receivers, modulators, demodulators, etc., although these may also be involved in the measurements. Measurements on twin-path and hot stand-by equipment which are not treated in Part 2, Section Two of the publication are also considered in this section. However, measurements related to the properties of the switch and of the switching process, which are applicable equally to stand-by channel switching equipment and to diversity, twin-path and hot stand-by equipment, will be covered by reference to Part 2, Section Two.

Overview

SIST HD 477.2.6 S1:2002 is a crucial international standard that specifies the measurement methods for equipment used in terrestrial radio-relay systems, focusing on diversity, twin-path, and hot stand-by equipment. Published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard ensures consistent and reliable testing practices for sub-systems supporting high-availability communications. It covers technical measurement approaches that are essential for performance verification, system reliability, and effective deployment of radio-relay infrastructure.

This section is part of a larger series on terrestrial radio-relay systems and specifically addresses the methods applicable for measuring equipment designed to enhance signal reliability by employing diversity techniques, twin-path configurations, and hot stand-by setups.

Key Topics

  • Diversity Equipment Testing: Outlines methods for measuring the performance of equipment that switches and/or combines diversity channels. These tests help determine how well the system maintains signal quality under various reception conditions.
  • Twin-Path Systems: Sets guidelines for the measurement of twin-path equipment, ensuring that both signal paths meet quality and redundancy standards.
  • Hot Stand-by Configurations: Explains procedures for verifying equipment that provides immediate backup in the event of a primary path failure, critical for network resilience.
  • Exclusion of Channel Equipment: The standard distinctly excludes direct measurements on transmitters, receivers, modulators, and demodulators, yet recognizes their involvement in broader test scenarios.
  • Switching Equipment Reference: Any measurements concerning the properties and behavior of switches and the switching process are handled by referencing other sections of the HD 477 standard series, promoting harmonized testing across different system components.

Applications

The measurement methods outlined in SIST HD 477.2.6 S1:2002 are widely applied in the following scenarios:

  • Telecommunications Network Design: Ensuring diversity and redundancy in terrestrial radio-relay stations for reliable data transmission.
  • Equipment Manufacturing and QA: Radio-relay equipment manufacturers use these test methods to validate performance and compliance before deployment.
  • Service Provider Maintenance: Network operators employ these measurements for routine system checks, upgrades, and troubleshooting, minimizing potential downtime.
  • Certification and Compliance: Regulatory and standardization bodies reference this standard to assess compliance with international radio-relay system requirements.

By following these standardized measurement procedures, organizations can maximize signal robustness, optimize system uptime, and deliver consistent service quality across a range of operational environments.

Related Standards

For enhanced context and interoperability, consider the following related standards:

  • SIST HD 477 Series: Comprehensive collection for all testing requirements related to equipment in terrestrial radio-relay systems.
  • IEC 60700 Series: Standards for radio-relay equipment general requirements and interfaces.
  • IEC 60835-1: Specification of radio-relay systems and performance standards.
  • ETSI EN 302 217: Specifications for fixed radio systems, covering system and equipment requirements.
  • Part 2, Section Two of SIST HD 477: Provides critical details on switch and switching process measurement techniques that complement this section.

Implementing the guidelines of SIST HD 477.2.6 S1:2002 supports robust radio-relay system operation, fostering interoperability, and compliance within the rapidly evolving field of terrestrial radio communications.
