Overview
SIST ETS 300 055-2:1996 defines the Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma for the Terminal Portability (TP) supplementary service in the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), utilizing the Digital Subscriber Signalling System No. one (DSS1) protocol. This standard specifies requirements for assessing whether an ISDN user-network interface implementation conforms to the protocol requirements for TP supplementary services at layer 3.
The document applies to both users and networks, supporting the harmonization of ISDN implementations across European public telecommunications operators. The PICS proforma follows guidelines in ISO/IEC 9646, ensuring clear, reproducible conformance claims related to ISDN TP supplementary services.
Key Topics
- Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS):
- A structured questionnaire for declaring which protocol features and options have been implemented in a given ISDN solution.
- Ensures suppliers can clearly state conformance to the relevant protocol specification.
- Scope and Applicability:
- Addresses conformance at the ISDN user-network interface (typically the T or S/T reference point, as per ITU-T Rec. I.411).
- Applies to both user equipment and network side implementations.
- Supplementary Service: Terminal Portability (TP):
- Focuses on the ability for terminals to retain service continuity and personalized features when moved within the ISDN network.
- DSS1 Protocol:
- The primary signalling protocol for ISDN user-network interface, supporting both basic call handling and supplementary services like TP.
- Instructions for Suppliers:
- Suppliers are to complete the PICS proforma, providing detailed product, system, and implementation information.
- Requirements address core (mandatory) and optional capabilities, with detailed tables for both user and network perspectives.
Applications
Implementing the PICS proforma as outlined in SIST ETS 300 055-2:1996 delivers significant benefits across the ISDN ecosystem:
- System Integrators and Vendors:
- Provides a uniform method to document and prove conformance of ISDN terminal and network implementations to the DSS1 TP protocol requirements.
- Supports preparation for formal conformance testing and certification.
- Network Operators:
- Enables easier interoperability assessment when integrating third-party ISDN devices or services.
- Assists in streamlining testing processes, reducing integration issues.
- Quality Assurance and Procurement:
- Promotes transparency in procurement by requiring suppliers to specify which mandatory and optional protocol features are supported.
- Forms the basis for conducting static conformance reviews, ensuring solutions meet essential ISDN specifications.
- Further Test Development:
- Serves as a foundation for future Protocol Implementation eXtra Information for Testing (PIXIT) and Abstract Test Suite (ATS) specifications related to ISDN supplementary services.
Related Standards
SIST ETS 300 055-2:1996 is part of a comprehensive suite of standards for ISDN Terminal Portability supplementary service and is closely related to:

Foreword
This European Telecommunication Standard (ETS) has been produced by the Signalling Protocols and
Switching (SPS) Technical Committee of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
This ETS is part 2 of a multi-part standard covering the Digital Subscriber Signalling System No. one
(DSS1) protocol specification for the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) Terminal Portability (TP)
supplementary service, as described below:
Part 1: "Protocol specification";
Part 2: "Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma specification";
Part 3: "Test Suite Structure and Test Purposes (TSS&TP) specification for the user";
Part 4: "Abstract Test Suite (ATS) and partial Protocol Implementation eXtra Information for Testing
(PIXIT) proforma specification for the user";
Part 5: "TSS&TP specification for the network";
Part 6: "ATS and partial PIXIT proforma specification for the network".
NOTE: The first part, ETS 300 055-1 (1991), containing the protocol specification, was initially
published as ETS 300 055 (1991) and has identical contents.
To evaluate conformance of a particular implementation, it is necessary to have a statement of which
capabilities and options have been implemented for a given Open Systems Interconnection (OSI)
protocol. Such a statement is called a Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS).

1 Scope
This second part of ETS 300 055 is applicable to the stage three of the Terminal Portability (TP)
supplementary service for the pan-European Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) as provided by
European public telecommunications operators at the T reference point or coincident S and T reference
point (as defined in ITU-T Recommendation I.411 [10]) by means of the Digital Subscriber Signalling
System No. one (DSS1) protocol. Stage three identifies the protocol procedures and switching functions
needed to support a telecommunications service (see CCITT Recommendation I.130 [9]).
This ETS provides the Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma for the ISDN
DSS1 TP supplementary service protocol as specified in ETS 300 055-1 [1] in compliance with the
relevant requirements and in accordance with the relevant guidance given in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [8].
The supplier of a protocol implementation which is claimed to conform to ETS 300 055-1 [1] is required to
complete a copy of the PICS proforma provided in annex A of this ETS and is required to provide the
information necessary to identify both the supplier and the implementation.
