Overview

SIST-TP ETSI/ETR 210 E1:2005 – ASN.1 Library Index; Version 1.1.1 is an informative standard published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), identical to ETSI ETR 210, Edition 1. This technical report establishes an authoritative index of elements contained in the ASN.1 library, as defined in ETS 300 655, and catalogues their use and re-definition within related telecommunications standards. The document serves as a reference for the management, maintenance, and application of ASN.1 data structures in telecommunications, supporting interoperability and consistency across systems using ASN.1 notation.

Key Topics

  • ASN.1 Library Index: Compiles a comprehensive list of ASN.1 type and value definitions contained in the library, facilitating tracking and traceability.
  • Element Usage: Documents which standards, specifications, or protocols use or redefine each element from the ASN.1 library.
  • Definitions and Abbreviations: Clarifies the terminology relevant to ASN.1 type definitions, value definitions, and common application elements.
  • Reference Framework: Connects the library index to key standards such as ETS 300 655 (ASN.1 library definition), ITU-T Recommendation X.680 (ASN.1 specification), and prominent ETSI deliverables.
  • Change Management: Provides clear identification codes for “users” (direct importers) and “definers” (re-definers) for precise version control and future updates.

Applications

The ASN.1 Library Index outlined in SIST-TP ETSI/ETR 210 E1:2005 offers practical benefits in several areas within telecommunications and information technology:

  • Interoperability Assurance: By cataloguing ASN.1 definitions and their use, the index supports consistent implementation across platforms and applications, reducing vendor-specific variations.
  • Protocol Development and Maintenance: Standards developers and system integrators can reference the index to determine existing ASN.1 elements suitable for reuse or requiring extension, streamlining protocol specification work.
  • Conformance Testing: Test engineers can utilize the index to verify correct usage or re-definition of ASN.1 elements in implementations, supporting compliance with international telecom frameworks.
  • Change Tracking: By documenting which elements are used or redefined in each standard, the index facilitates controlled, auditable updates and effective change management.
  • Documentation and Training: The index aids in onboarding and educating engineers and technical writers about the available ASN.1 resources, promoting better documentation and understanding of telecommunication protocols.

Related Standards

The effectiveness and value of SIST-TP ETSI/ETR 210 E1:2005 are enhanced by its integration with the following key international standards and publications:

  • ETS 300 655: Defines the ASN.1 Library; the foundational document for the indexed elements.
  • ITU-T Recommendation X.680 (ISO 8824-1): Provides the formal specification for Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1), ensuring global interoperability.
  • ETR 090 & ETR 091: Establish object identifier trees for Intelligent Network (IN) and Mobile domains, contributing additional reference points for ASN.1 element use and definition.
  • ETS 300 196-1, ETS 300 599, ETS 300 622: Standards referencing or redefining ASN.1 library elements in specific telecommunications protocols.
  • TCR-TR 046: Sets forth the procedures and rules for ASN.1 library management.
  • TCR-TR 019: Provides evaluation criteria for ASN.1 syntax and semantic checking tools.

Foreword
This ETSI Technical Report (ETR) has been produced by the Signalling Protocols and Switching (SPS)
Technical Committee of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
ETRs are informative documents resulting from ETSI studies which are not appropriate for European
Telecommunication Standard (ETS) or Interim European Telecommunication Standard (I-ETS) status. An
ETR may be used to publish material which is either of an informative nature, relating to the use or the
application of ETSs or I-ETSs, or which is immature and not yet suitable for formal adoption as an ETS or
an I-ETS.
This ETS was generated using a template provided by TCR-TR 046. The procedures defined there were
used to identify the common application elements included in the library index, ensuring that its rules apply
to the contents of this ETR.
NOTE: TCR-TR 046 is only available to ETSI members.

1 Scope
The main objective of this ETR is to establish a library index for the ASN.1 Library, a library containing
ASN.1 definitions as defined in ETS 300 655 [1].
Every new version of this ETR will contain an updated list of users importing type references and/or value
references from a specified version of the library.
The purpose of the library index is:
- list all library elements;
- list all users of library elements;
- list all definers of library elements (non-users).
2 References
This ETR incorporates by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. These
references are cited at the appropriate places in the text and the publications listed hereafter. For dated
references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this ETR only
when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references the latest edition of the
publication referred to applies.
