Overview
SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.2.1:2014 is a European standard developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and ETSI, focusing on environmental engineering for telecommunications equipment. Specifically, it addresses the classification of environmental conditions and their severities to which telecommunications equipment may be exposed during storage. The standard ensures that equipment remains reliable and compliant when stored in a variety of environmental scenarios, minimizing risk due to environmental factors. These environmental conditions and severities have a very low probability of being exceeded, typically less than 1%.
Key Topics
Environmental Classes for Storage:
The standard defines several classes of storage conditions for telecommunications equipment, covering differences in weather protection and temperature/humidity control, with references to widely adopted IEC standards.- Class 1.1: Weatherprotected, partly temperature-controlled storage. Typically inside buildings with some level of environmental control-but without humidity control.
- Class 1.2: Weatherprotected, not temperature-controlled storage. May experience wide fluctuations in temperature and humidity, potentially including condensation and minor ingress of water, sand, or dust.
- Class 1.3 and 1.3E: Non-weatherprotected storage, with extended class for more severe conditions. Equipment could be exposed directly to outdoor climatic extremes, precipitation, and increased biological or mechanical risks.
Climatic, Biological, Chemical, and Mechanical Parameters:
The standard provides detailed guidance for each environmental class covering:- Air temperature and humidity (relative and absolute)
- Solar and heat radiation
- Precipitation and condensation
- Biological threats (mould, rodents)
- Chemically active substances (corrosive gases, salt mists)
- Mechanically active substances (sand, dust)
- Vibration and shock endurance during storage
Packaged Equipment:
Environmental conditions specified in this standard apply to equipment in its packaging, reflecting real-world storage practices.
Applications
SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.2.1:2014 is essential for organizations involved in the design, manufacturing, procurement, or storage of telecommunications equipment. Its practical applications include:
- Product Design: Ensures equipment can withstand defined storage environments, helping manufacturers develop robust products.
- Procurement Specifications: Allows buyers to specify equipment that meets particular storage conditions for safe keeping in varying environments.
- Logistics and Warehousing: Guides organizations on appropriate storage methods and locations for equipment, considering risk factors like temperature variation, moisture, or dust.
- Risk Mitigation: Reduces the chance of equipment failure or degradation due to improper storage, safeguarding investments and service reliability.
- Regulatory Compliance: Helps organizations comply with European and international standards, increasing global market access and standardization.
Related Standards
The following standards are referenced or related to SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.2.1:2014:
- EN 300 019 Series: Covers classifications and test specifications for environmental conditions relating to storage, transportation, stationary use, vehicle installations, and more.
- IEC 60721-3-1: Classification of environmental conditions-storage.
- IEC 60068-2-27: Environmental testing-shock.
- IEC 60721-2-4: Environmental conditions-solar radiation and temperature.
- Other Parts of EN 300 019: Address transport (Part 1-2), stationary and mobile operational environments, and testing methods.
Applying SIST EN 300 019-1-1 V2.2.1:2014 ensures telecommunications equipment is stored under conditions that protect its integrity, longevity, and readiness for deployment, providing a foundation for effective environmental risk management in the telecom sector.

The present document is part 1, sub-part 1 of a multi-part deliverable covering the classification of environmental conditions and environmental tests for telecommunications equipment, as identified below: Part 1: "Classification of environmental conditions": (see note 1) Sub-part 0:
"Introduction"; Sub-part 1: "Storage"; Sub-part 2:
"Transportation"; Sub-part 3:
"Stationary use at weatherprotected locations"; Sub-part 4:
"Stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations"; Sub-part 5:
"Ground vehicle installations"; Sub-part 6:
"Ship environments"; Sub-part 7:
"Portable and non-stationary use"; Sub-part 8:
"Stationary use at underground locations"; Part 2: "Specification of environmental tests" (see note 2). NOTE 1: Specifies different standardized environmental classes covering climatic and biological conditions, chemically and mechanically active substances and mechanical conditions during storage, transportation and in use. Sub-part 1-0 forms a general overview of part 1. NOTE 2: Specifies the recommended test severities and test methods for the different environmental classes.
National transposition dates Date of adoption of this EN: 21 April 2014 Date of latest announcement of this EN (doa): 31 July 2014 Date of latest publication of new National Standard or endorsement of this EN (dop/e):

ETSI ETSI EN 300 019-1-1 V2.2.1 (2014-04)5 1 Scope The present document defines classes of environmental conditions and their severities to which telecommunication equipment may be exposed during storage. The severities specified are those which will have a low probability of being exceeded; generally less than 1 %. NOTE 1: Temporary storage during transport is included in part 1-2: Transportation. NOTE 2: If the equipment is stored in its package, the environmental conditions apply to the packaged equipment. 2 References References are either specific (identified by date of publication and/or edition number or version number) or non-specific. For specific references, only the cited version applies. For non-specific references, the latest version of the reference document (including any amendments) applies. ETSI ETSI EN 300 019-1-1 V2.2.1 (2014-04)6 weatherprotected location: location at which the equipment is protected from weather influences NOTE 1: Totally weatherprotected location: Direct weather influences are totally excluded. NOTE 2: Partly weatherprotected location: Direct weather influences are not complete
