Overview

ISO 441:1997 - Textile machinery and accessories - Drop wires for warp stop motions for weaving machines without automatic drawing-in is a key international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This standard specifies the principal dimensions, tolerances, and methods of designation for drop wires used in warp stop motions on weaving machines that do not feature automatic drawing-in. The requirements cover drop wires drawn in by hand or by pinning machines, supporting consistency, interoperability, and quality in textile equipment manufacturing.

Key Topics

  • Dimension and Tolerance Specifications
The standard establishes uniform measurements and dimensional tolerances for drop wires, addressing requirements for both mechanical/electromechanical and electrical warp stop motions.

  • Drop Wire Types
ISO 441:1997 applies to four main types of drop wires:

    • MG: Closed end, mechanical/electromechanical motion
    • MO: Open end, mechanical/electromechanical motion
    • EG: Closed end, electrical motion
    • EO: Open end, electrical motion
  • Thread Eye Shapes
Provisions exist for U-shaped and other shaped thread eyes (e.g., round).

  • Designation System
Detailed designation formats are provided, incorporating type, eye shape, dimensions (length, width, thickness), and reference to the standard.

Applications

Manufacturers, suppliers, and maintenance providers in the textile machinery sector use ISO 441:1997 to:

  • Ensure Compatibility and Quality
By following standardized dimensions and tolerances, drop wires are ensured to fit properly and function reliably in warp stop systems, reducing downtime and improving weaving quality.

  • Standardize Component Sourcing
Textile mills and equipment manufacturers can reliably specify or source drop wires that meet a global standard, promoting interoperability and supply chain efficiency.

  • Support Safety and Performance
Properly specified drop wires help maintain the effectiveness of warp stop motions, directly impacting fabric quality and minimizing material wastage due to warp yarn breakage.

  • Facilitate International Trade
Uniform specifications ease cross-border procurement and support global market access for compliant textile machinery and accessories.

Related Standards

When working with ISO 441:1997, consider these related standards and topics to ensure comprehensive compliance and compatibility within textile machinery:

  • ISO 96
Specification for weaving machinery accessories, including heddles and reeds.
  • ISO 8116
Covers additional technical requirements for weaving machine parts.
  • ISO/TC 72 Textile Machinery Standards
Broader series encompassing mechanisms, safety, and accessory components for textile manufacturing.

Keywords: ISO 441:1997, textile machinery, weaving machines, drop wires, warp stop motions, dimensions, tolerances, mechanical motion, electrical motion, textile standards, machine accessories.

By referencing and implementing ISO 441:1997, industry stakeholders reinforce efficiency, safety, and international compatibility in the operation and maintenance of weaving machinery.

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 441 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 72, Textile machinery, Subcommittee SC 3, Machinery for fabric
manufacture.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (IS0 441-19781,
