Overview
ISO 15065:2005 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), specifying the dimensions and designation for countersinks used with countersunk head screws that conform to the head configuration detailed in ISO 7721. This standard ensures a unified approach to the manufacture and application of countersinks, promoting interchangeability and consistency across a wide range of mechanical and engineering projects.
ISO 15065:2005 applies to various screw types covered by numerous ISO standards, including both slotted and cross-recessed countersunk screws, raised head screws, tapping screws, and hexalobular socket screws. Compliance with this standard supports the reliable assembly of components where flush fitting of screw heads is required for functional or aesthetic reasons.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: Specifies the dimensions and designation of countersinks compatible with the head configurations of countersunk screws as per ISO 7721.
- Screw Types Covered: The standard applies to slotted, cross-recessed, and hexalobular socket countersunk head screws, including varieties for tapping and drilling.
- Reference Standards: Aligns with related ISO standards such as ISO 2009, ISO 2010, ISO 1482, ISO 7046, ISO 7047, ISO 7050, ISO 14584, ISO 14586, and ISO 14587.
- Dimensional Requirements: Provides unified dimensions for countersinks to ensure compatibility and interchangeability between screws and receiving hardware.
- Designation System: Outlines a clear nomenclature for identifying countersinks by their nominal size and conformity to ISO 7721.
Applications
ISO 15065:2005 is vital in any industry where secure and flush fastening with countersunk screws is critical. Common applications include:
- Mechanical Engineering: Ensures reliable, flush mounts of machine components, reducing snag points and improving aesthetics.
- Automotive and Aerospace: Used where precision fastener seating enhances safety, structural integrity, and appearance.
- Electronics Assembly: Allows for the neat mounting of circuit boards and panels with screws that sit flush with surfaces.
- Construction and Fabrication: Supports consistent fastening of metal, wood, and composite materials where countersunk fasteners are preferred.
- General Manufacturing: Facilitates the mass production of parts, ensuring that different manufacturers' components fit together seamlessly.
Implementing countersinks as specified by this standard improves assembly efficiency, enhances product quality, and reduces the risk of improper fastener seating that could compromise the integrity of the finished assembly.
Related Standards
A number of ISO standards are closely linked to ISO 15065:2005 for countersink and countersunk head screw applications:
- ISO 7721: Defines the head configuration and gauging for countersunk head screws.
- ISO 273: Specifies clearance holes for bolts and screws.
- ISO 2009, ISO 2010: Pertains to slotted countersunk head screws.
- ISO 1482, ISO 1483: Covers slotted tapping screws.
- ISO 7046-1, ISO 7046-2, ISO 7047, ISO 7050, ISO 7051: Address cross-recessed countersunk screws.
- ISO 14584, ISO 14586, ISO 14587: Focus on hexalobular socket countersunk screws.
- ISO 15482, ISO 15483: Relate to cross-recessed countersunk drilling screws.
Adhering to ISO 15065:2005 and these associated standards is essential for engineers, manufacturers, and designers aiming for global compatibility and optimal performance in products utilizing countersunk fasteners.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

Avant-propos
votants.
