Overview
ISO 14723:2025 specifies internationally recognized requirements for the design, manufacture, quality control, testing, and documentation of subsea pipeline valves in the oil and gas sector, including lower carbon energy initiatives. Targeting ball, check, gate, plug, and axial on-off valves, this standard ensures safe and reliable operations in subsea pipeline transportation systems. ISO 14723:2025 supplements API 6DSS, aligning global industry practices and supporting compatibility for ASME Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 valves specifically designed for subsea pipeline applications. Use outside these stated purposes is not covered by the standard.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: Focused exclusively on subsea pipeline valves for petroleum, natural gas, and lower carbon energy transportation systems. Applies to designated ASME pressure classes, ensuring relevance to industry needs.
- Valve Types Covered: Ball, check, gate, plug, and axial on-off valves, covering a broad range of subsea isolation and flow control needs.
- Reference Integration: Serves as a supplement to API 6DSS, 3rd edition, incorporating Addenda and Errata, ensuring up-to-date harmonization with industry baseline specifications.
- Quality and Testing: Detailed provisions for the manufacturing process, assembly, and factory acceptance testing, supporting consistent product reliability.
- Marking Requirements: Mandates clear identification of ISO 14723 on the valve nameplate, with the allowance for dual marking alongside API 6DSS, supporting traceability and regulatory compliance.
- Documentation: Emphasizes comprehensive record-keeping for design and quality assurance, facilitating audits and lifecycle tracking.
Applications
ISO 14723:2025 is essential for oil and gas companies, engineering firms, manufacturers, and suppliers involved in the design, installation, and maintenance of subsea pipeline systems. Its adoption ensures that:
- Subsea Operations: Critical valves used in subsea pipelines meet uniform standards for performance in high-pressure, underwater environments.
- Safety Compliance: Aligns valve selection and usage with international safety and quality benchmarks, minimizing operational risks and supporting regulatory acceptance.
- Project Specifications: Acts as a definitive reference for procurement, design, fabrication, and inspection in offshore oil, gas, and emerging lower carbon energy projects.
- Third-party Certification: Supports certification schemes and client requirements by providing globally acknowledged benchmarks for subsea valve equipment.
This standard underpins the integration of subsea valves in oil and gas transportation infrastructure, ensuring asset integrity and operational efficiency under challenging subsea operational conditions.
Related Standards
- API 6DSS: Specification for subsea pipeline valves, 3rd edition, with Addenda and Errata - the foundation for ISO 14723’s requirements.
- ISO 14313: Pipeline valves for oil and gas industries, providing a related framework for valves in pipeline transportation systems not specific to subsea environments.
- ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code/ASME Class Ratings: Essential references for pressure class ratings covered under this standard.
Leveraging ISO 14723:2025 in the design and operation of subsea pipeline valves promotes reliability, safety, and efficiency, contributing to successful long-term management of oil, gas, and lower carbon energy transportation projects.
