Overview

ISO/IEC 23003-6:2022 is an international standard published by the ISO and IEC, focusing on information technology and MPEG audio technologies. Specifically, this standard provides the reference software for Unified Speech and Audio Coding (USAC), as defined in ISO/IEC 23003-3. The document delivers USAC simulation software, including decoding, encoding, and utility modules, supporting the consistent and accurate implementation of this advanced audio coding technology across different platforms.

By providing an official reference implementation, ISO/IEC 23003-6:2022 promotes interoperability, compliance, and high-fidelity audio processing in products that utilize the USAC standard. Its use is central to developers, manufacturers, and researchers working in digital audio technology and multimedia systems.

Key Topics

ISO/IEC 23003-6:2022 addresses several main areas crucial for implementing USAC technology:

  • Reference Software Structure: The standard outlines the architecture and organization of the provided software modules, ensuring clarity and consistency.
  • Bitstream Decoding Software: Normative reference implementations decode audio bitstreams conforming to ISO/IEC 23003-3, ensuring accuracy in USAC decoding.
  • Bitstream Encoding Software: Informative reference encoders generate compressed USAC bitstreams, supporting consistent encoding practices, though encoding techniques are not specified by this part.
  • Utility Software: Additional tools assist with processes such as reading and writing MP4 file formats, aiding in the integration and testing of USAC implementations.
  • Copyright and Licensing: The software modules come with a comprehensive copyright disclaimer and licensing terms, ensuring legal clarity for commercial and research uses.

Applications

The practical value of ISO/IEC 23003-6:2022 lies in its broad applicability to the field of digital audio and multimedia systems. Typical use cases include:

  • Reference Implementation for Developers: Audio software and hardware manufacturers rely on the provided source code as a baseline for implementing or verifying USAC-compliant decoders and encoders.
  • Conformance Testing: Organizations use the standard’s software to ensure their implementations meet all requirements set out in ISO/IEC 23003-3, facilitating interoperability between devices and services.
  • Research and Prototyping: Academic and industrial researchers utilize the reference code as a starting point when developing new algorithms or enhancing audio compression tools.
  • Product Quality Assurance: Audio quality and performance comparisons are made against the standard implementation to benchmark and optimize commercial audio codecs.
  • Integration in Multimedia Applications: Developers integrate the reference modules into multimedia frameworks to enable advanced audio playback, editing, and streaming functionalities.

Related Standards

ISO/IEC 23003-6:2022 is a part of the broader series dedicated to MPEG audio technologies and Unified Speech and Audio Coding:

  • ISO/IEC 23003-3: The main specification for USAC, which defines the technical and normative requirements for unified speech and audio coding.
  • Other ISO/IEC 23003 Parts: The series includes other parts addressing different aspects of MPEG audio technology, such as system design and implementation guidance.
  • ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 Standards: This subcommittee develops international standards for the coding of audio, picture, multimedia, and hypermedia information, ensuring compatibility and innovation in the field.

4 Reference software structure
4.1 General
This software has been derived from reference models used in the process of developing of
ISO/IEC 23003-3.
Reference software is normative in the sense that it correctly implements the USAC decoding processes
described in ISO/IEC 23003-3. Complying ISO/IEC 23003-3 implementations are not expected to follow
the algorithms or the programming techniques used by the reference software. Although the decoding
software is considered normative, it cannot add anything to the textual technical description of USAC
included in ISO/IEC 23003-3.
The software contained in this document is divided into several categories:
