Overview

ISO 23205:2014 specifies the minimum design and performance requirements for an instructional seat and restraint intended for limited use by a trainer, trainee or service person inside an enclosed cab of an agricultural tractor. The standard clarifies intended use, exclusion (not designed for children), and practical safety measures to minimize interference with operator controls and visibility.

The document is a second-edition ISO standard developed by ISO/TC 23 (Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry), SC 4 (Tractors), and references related seat and seating-point standards.

Key Topics

  • Scope and intended users: The instructional seat is for trainers, trainees or service personnel only and is explicitly not designed for children.
  • Location and installation: The seat shall be fitted only in tractors with an enclosed cab and be positioned to minimize impact on operation and visibility.
  • Clearance and envelope: Vertical clearance above the seat index point (SIP) is specified as at least 830 mm, with a permitted reduction to 710 mm if adequate padding restores 830 mm when deflected. SIP is to be determined in accordance with ISO 5353.
  • Seat and backrest: The instructional seat area must be of sufficient size and shape and include an integral or separate backrest; backrest may be a non-glazed cab component provided dimensional requirements are met.
  • Restraint system: A restraint system must be provided and comply with ISO 3776-1, ISO 3776-2, and ISO 3776-3 (anchorage location, anchorage strength and assembly requirements) or other applicable standards.
  • Auxiliary features: At least one handgrip/handrail (minimum length 150 mm) and a suitable lower-extremity area/footrest are required to avoid interference with the operator.
  • Visibility and safety information: A safety sign reminding occupants to wear the seat belt must be visible from the instructional seat; the operator’s manual must include specific guidance (see Applications).

Applications

ISO 23205:2014 is used by tractor manufacturers, cab designers, safety engineers and training organizations to:

  • Provide a standardized instructional seating solution inside enclosed ROPS cabs where two-person operation is required for training or diagnostics.
  • Improve trainer and trainee safety during instruction by ensuring restraint and protective clearances consistent with tractor design.
  • Guide cab layout choices so the additional occupant does not obstruct operator controls or sightlines.

Operator manuals must include at minimum:

  • Appropriate and inappropriate uses (trainer/trainee/service person vs. children/other passengers);
  • Requirement to wear the seat belt;
  • Identified hazards (falling from the machine, obstruction of operator view).

Related Standards

  • ISO 3776-1 - Seat belts: Anchorage location requirements
  • ISO 3776-2 - Seat belts: Anchorage strength requirements
  • ISO 3776-3 - Seat belts: Assembly requirements
  • ISO 5353 - Seat index point determination

Adopting ISO 23205:2014 helps align instructional-seat design with internationally recognized safety and seating conventions while preserving operator functionality and trainer safety.

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International

Introduction
This International Standard is intended to guide the manufacturer who wishes to supply an instructional
seat and restraint inside the enclosed cab of an agricultural tractor. Nevertheless, many types of
agricultural tractors will not be able to accommodate this feature.
This International Standard is recognition that an instructional seat for a trainer or trainee or service
person on an agricultural tractor can be useful when providing training or instruction, or to enable a
second person to aid in problem diagnosis.
