Overview

ISO 5222-3:2026 specifies standardized methods for testing and calculating the annual sensible heating and cooling recovery performance factors of heat recovery ventilators (HRVs). Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this document is part of a broader series that establishes a unified approach for assessing the seasonal energy efficiency of HRVs, ensuring consistency in product marking and facilitating performance comparison. The standard covers HRVs as defined in ISO 16494-1 and describes the necessary test conditions and procedures to determine the annual sensible heating and cooling recovery seasonal performance factors under various temperature conditions.

Key Topics

  • Testing Methodology:

    • Specifies standardized test conditions and procedures for HRVs.
    • Outlines requirements for equipment accuracy and measurement uncertainty as referenced in related ISO standards (ISO 16494-1, ISO 5222-1, ISO 5222-2).
    • Defines test conditions using standardized temperature bins to represent varying climate zones.
  • Calculation Methods:

    • Details the calculation of the annual sensible heating and cooling recovery performance factor (Fa).
    • Includes methods for determining recovery capacity and power input for both heating and cooling seasons.
    • Describes how to apply default or specific temperature bin distributions to reflect different regional climates.
  • Performance Factors:

    • Provides formulas for calculating:
      • Sensible heating and cooling recovery capacities.
      • Annual performance factor based on recovered energy relative to energy input.
    • Explains how to adapt calculation procedures to suit particular applications or climatic conditions.
  • Reporting Requirements:

    • Establishes minimum data to be included in test reports, such as descriptions, references, test results, and key metrics for HRVs.

Applications

  • Performance Evaluation:

    • Enables manufacturers and testing laboratories to rigorously evaluate HRV products’ seasonal energy performance under defined and comparable conditions.
    • Facilitates accurate product ratings by providing a common method for declaring annual sensible heating and cooling recovery performance.
  • Energy Efficiency Comparison:

    • Allows for direct comparison of HRVs on a standardized basis, supporting procurement decisions for residential, commercial, and industrial building ventilation systems.
    • Supports utility programs and regulations aiming to increase energy efficiency in HVAC systems.
  • Product Certification and Marking:

    • Provides a recognized methodology for verifying claims about energy recovery and ventilation performance, helping ensure compliance with national and international efficiency requirements.
    • Improves consumer and stakeholder confidence through validated performance metrics.
