A certificate or declaration of conformity to the requirements of ISO 18436-2:2014 in accordance with ISO 18436-1, provides recognition and evidence that individuals are able to perform vibration measurements and analysis for machinery condition monitoring and diagnostics using a range of vibration measurement equipment. ISO 18436-2:2014 specifies a four-category classification programme that is based on the technical areas delineated herein.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards

Introduction
Vibration analysis using measurements to monitor condition and diagnose faults in machinery has become a
key activity in predictive maintenance programmes for many industries. Other condition monitoring
technologies including infrared thermography, acoustic emission, lubricant analysis, wear debris, and motor
current analysis are used as complementary condition analysis tools. Those in the manufacturing industry who
have diligently and consistently applied these techniques have experienced a return on investment far
exceeding their expectations. However, the effectiveness of these programmes depends on the capabilities of
individuals who perform the measurements and analyse the data.
A programme, administered by an assessment body (see ISO 18436-1 for definition), is developed to train
and assess the competence of personnel whose duties require the appropriate theoretical and practical
knowledge and relevant experience in vibration analysis for machinery condition monitoring.
This part of ISO 18436 defines the requirements against which personnel associated with vibration analysis
for machinery condition monitoring are to be qualified and the methods of assessing such personnel.

1 Scope
This part of ISO 18436 specifies requirements for the qualification, training, relevant experience and

4 Classification of personnel
4.1 General
Depending upon their qualifications and experience in vibration analysis, individuals meeting the requirements
of this standard shall be classified in one of four categories. They shall have demonstrated competence
appropriate to their classification category, as indicated in Annex A, in the concepts of machine condition
monitoring using vibration analysis.
The classification of individuals at all categories shall be subject to the scope and any limitations of the award
issued by the assessing body. Authority to work shall be limited or specified by the employer or client.
Individuals shall provide recommendations based on the limits of their training and experience. This
qualification shall not allow a practitioner to make recommendations or give advice that may affect plant
design, safety or operation without discussion with, and approval from, the appropriate plant
specialist/manager and/or operator

Introduction
Non-intrusive technologies used in condition monitoring and fault diagnosis include vibration, infrared
thermography, oil and wear debris analysis, acoustic and ultrasonic analysis, and electric signature
analysis.
Those in manufacturing industry who have diligently and consistently applied these techniques have
experienced a return on investment far exceeding their expectations. However, the effectiveness of these
programmes depends on the capabilities of individuals who perform the measurements and analyse the
data.
A programme, specified in this part of ISO 18436, has been developed to train and assess the competence
of personnel whose duties require the appropriate theoretical and practical knowledge and relevant
experience in VA for machinery condition monitoring and diagnostics.
This part of ISO 18436 defines the requirements against which personnel associated with vibration
measurement and analysis for machinery condition monitoring and diagnostics are to be assessed, and
the methods of assessing such personnel. Applicants should be aware that employers and customers
are likely to have the greatest confidence in those vibration analysts certified by accredited bodies.
Alternately, applicants can choose to seek recognition from other party assessment bodies which may
provide the next lower level of confidence. Lastly, applicants may rely upon their own self-assessment
and declaration of competence but in doing so they should be aware that employers and customers are
likely to have the least confidence in this option.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in ISO 1925, ISO 2041, ISO 13372, ,
and ISO 18436-1 apply.
4 Classification of personnel
4.1 General
Depending upon their competence in VA, individuals meeting the requirements of this part of ISO 18436
shall be classified in one of four categories (4.2 to 4.5). They shall have demonstrated competence
appropriate to their classification category as indicated in Annex A, in the concepts of machine condition
monitoring using VA.
The classification of individuals at all categories shall be subject to the scope and any limitations of the
award issued by the assessing body. Authority to work shall be limited or specified by the employer or
client. Individuals shall provide recommendations based on the limits of their training and experience.
This declaration shall not allow a practitioner to make recommendations or give advice that may affect
plant design, safety or operation without discussion with, and approval from, the appropriate plant
specialist, manager or operator. The limits of the practitioner are specified in this clause whereas the
limits of liability shall be agreed between the practitioner and their employer or client.
The classification category of the practitioner and any requirements for additional knowledge to work
with specific equipment shall be subject to agreement between the customer and service supplier. This
qualification shall provide the practitioner with sufficient knowledge to be able to make measurements
and interpret data as appropriate for their category. In addition, the applicability of the qualification
to a particular specialized machine type or types should be verified by the client through reference
to the previous experience and training of the practitioner. It is recognized that different industrial
applications require knowledge of varying aspects of VA. Using supporting documented evidence, the
supplier of the VA service shall be able to demonstrate to the employer or client, that staff carrying out
work has the appropriate machine knowledge and experience.
Where an individual has specialized knowledge in a particular concept of VA or in specific types of
machinery, they may be capable, when approved by the client or employer, of working beyond their
qualification classification category. Their certificate or declaration of conformity from the assessment
body shall remain as it was at the time it was issued.

Introduction
Les technologies non intrusives utilisées dans le cadre de la surveillance d’état et du diagnostic de
défaillance comprennent l’analyse des vibrations, la thermographie infrarouge, l’analyse des lubrifiants,
l’analyse émission acoustique et ultrasonore, ainsi que l’analyse du courant électrique.
Les entreprises de l'industrie de transformation qui ont appliqué assidûment et régulièrement ces
techniques ont bénéficié d'un retour sur investissement qui dépassait de loin leurs attentes. Toutefois,
l’efficacité de ces programmes dépend des capacités des personnes qui réalisent les mesurages et
analysent les données.
Un programme, spécifié dans la présente partie de l’ISO 18436, a été développé pour former et évaluer
les compétences du personnel dont le travail nécessite de posséder des connaissances théoriques et
pratiques appropriées ainsi qu’une expérience en analyse des vibrations dans le domaine de la
surveillance et du diagnostic d’état des machines.
La présente partie de l’ISO 18436 définit les exigences d’évaluation du personnel chargé du mesurage et
de l’analyse des vibrations pour la surveillance et le diagnostic d’état des machines ainsi que les
méthodes d’évaluation de ce personnel. Il convient que les participants sachent que les employeurs et
les clients sont susceptibles d’avoir une totale confiance en ces analystes vibratoires certifiés par des
organismes agréés. Sinon, les participants peuvent choisir d’être reconnus par des organismes
d’évaluation tiers qui peuvent garantir le niveau de confiance juste en‐dessous. Enfin, ils peuvent se
fonder sur leur propre auto‐évaluation et sur leur déclaration de compétences. Toutefois, en faisant
cela, il convient qu’ils sachent que les employeurs et les clients risquent d’avoir très peu confiance en
cette option.

1 Domaine d’application
La présente partie de l’ISO 18436 spécifie les exigences relatives à la formation, à l’expérience et au
contrôle du personnel chargé de la surveillance et du diagnostic d’état des machines à l’aide de l’analyse
des vibrations.
Un certificat ou une déclaration de conformité aux exigences de la présente partie de l’ISO 18436
conformément à l’ISO 18436‐1, permet de garantir et d’attester que les personnes sont capables
d’effectuer des mesurages et des analyses des vibrations pour la surveillance et le diagnostic d’état des
machines à l’aide d’un équipement de mesurage des vibrations.La présente partie de l’ISO 18436
spécifie un programme de classification en quatre catégories qui repose sur les domaines techniques
décrits dans le présent document.

3 Termes et définitions
Pour les besoins du présent document, les termes et définitions donnés dans l’ISO 1925, l’ISO 2041,
l’ISO 13372 et l’ISO 18436‐1 s’appliquent.
4 Classification du personnel
4.1 Généralités
Selon leurs compétences en analyse des vibrations, les personnes répondant aux exigences de la
présente partie de l’ISO 18436 doivent être classées dans l’une des quatre catégories (4.2 à 4.5). Ils
doivent avoir démontré des compétences appropriées à leur catégorie de classification, comme indiqué

dans l’Annexe A, dans le domaine de la surveillance d’état des machines basée sur l’analyse des
vibrations.
La classification des personnes dans toutes les catégories doit faire partie du domaine d’application et
toute restriction d’attribution doit être délivrée par l’organisme d’évaluation. L’autorisation de travail
doit être limitée ou spécifiée par l’employeur ou le client. Les personnes doivent fournir des
recommandations sur la base des limites de leur formation et de leur expérience. Cette déclaration
n’autorise pas un technicien à faire des recommandations ou à donner des conseils susceptibles
d’affecter le plan, la sécurité ou le fonctionnement des installations industrielles en l’absence de
discussion avec le spécialiste, le responsable ou l’opérateur de l’installation, et de son approbation. Les
limites du technicien sont spécifiées dans le présent paragraphe alors que les limites de responsabilité
doivent faire l’objet d’un accord entre le technicien et son employeur ou son client.
La catégorie de classification du technicien et les exigences relatives aux autres connaissances à
acquérir pour travailler avec un équipement spécifique doivent faire l’objet d’un accord entre le client
et le prestataire de services. Cette qualification doit permettre au technicien d’acquérir suffisamment de
connaissances pour faire les mesurages et interpréter les données en fonction de sa catégorie. De plus, il
convient que l’applicabilité de la qualification pour un type ou des types particulier(s) de machines
spécialisées soit vérifiée par le client par une référence à l’expérience antérieure et à la formation du
