Overview
IEC 60966-2-6:2003 is an international standard established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focused on radio frequency (RF) and coaxial cable assemblies for radio and TV receivers. This detail specification applies specifically to flexible coaxial cable assemblies, as described in IEC 60096-2, designed for a frequency range of 0 to 3,000 MHz and utilizing IEC 61169-24 connectors (commonly known as "type F" connectors). The standard is particularly relevant to cable assemblies falling within cable subfamily F, which are widely used in consumer radio and television equipment.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Defines the requirements for RF coaxial cable assemblies intended for the connection of radio and TV receivers
- Applies to assemblies constructed from flexible coaxial cables compliant with IEC 60096-2
Performance Specifications
- Specifies electrical characteristics such as characteristic impedance (typically 75 ohms), attenuation, voltage proof, insulation resistance, and screening effectiveness
- Outlines mechanical requirements, including tensile strength, flexure durability, and flexing endurance
Connector Compatibility
- Focuses on assemblies equipped with IEC 61169-24 connectors, supporting reliable connections in 75-ohm cable distribution systems
Testing and Quality Assurance
- Describes test methods and qualification procedures based on referenced IEC publications
- Includes visual inspection, dimensional verification, electrical performance testing (e.g., reflection properties, insertion loss), and mechanical tests
Marking and Variants
- Provides recommendations for product marking and highlights the importance of variant-specific testing
Applications
IEC 60966-2-6 is widely adopted in the manufacturing and quality assurance of cable assemblies for the RF signal distribution in:
- Consumer radio and television receivers
- Cable TV systems
- Satellite receiver installations
- Terrestrial antenna connections
These assemblies are essential for:
- Ensuring high-quality RF signal transfer with minimal loss and interference
- Maintaining consistent performance across a broad frequency range up to 3,000 MHz
- Supporting compatibility and interoperability of equipment through standardized connector types
Flexible coaxial cable assemblies that comply with IEC 60966-2-6 help manufacturers and system integrators guarantee product reliability, compatibility, and performance-key factors in delivering uninterrupted audio and video signals to end users.
Related Standards
For comprehensive implementation and understanding, IEC 60966-2-6 should be used in conjunction with other pertinent standards, including:
- IEC 60966-1: Generic specification for radio frequency and coaxial cable assemblies - general requirements and test methods
- IEC 60966-2-1: Sectional specification for flexible coaxial cable assemblies
- IEC 60966-2-2: Blank detail specification for flexible coaxial cable assemblies
- IEC 60096-2: Specification for flexible coaxial cables
- IEC 61169-24: Sectional specification for RF coaxial connectors with screw coupling (type F connectors)
- IEC 61196-1: Generic requirements and test methods for RF cables
- IEC 61022: Interconnection of radio and TV receivers to feeder system outlets
- IEC 60410: Sampling plans and procedures for inspection by attributes
Adherence to IEC 60966-2-6 and its related standards helps manufacturers meet international requirements, support industry best practices, and ensure the reliability and performance of RF coaxial cable assemblies in consumer and professional RF distribution setups.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. T
