General Information

Abstract

IEC 60255-22-4:2008 specifies the general requirements for electrical fast transient immunity tests for measuring relays and protection equipment for power system protection, including the control, monitoring and process interface equipment used with these systems. Is based on IEC 61000-4-4. The objective of the tests is to confirm that the equipment under test will operate correctly when energized and subjected to repetitive fast transients (bursts) such as those originating from interrupting of inductive loads, relay contact bounce, etc. The main change with respect to the previous edition is the improvement of the test severity level regarding the repetition rate.

Overview

IEC 60255-22-4 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies electrical fast transient/burst immunity tests for measuring relays and protection equipment. Part of the broader IEC 60255 series, this standard focuses on ensuring the robustness and reliability of power system protection devices against electrical disturbances caused by fast transient bursts. Such disturbances mainly originate from switching operations, relay contact bounce, and the interrupting of inductive loads within electrical power systems.

This standard, based on IEC 61000-4-4, outlines the general requirements and test methods designed to verify that relays and protection systems maintain proper operation under repetitive fast transient conditions. The 2008 edition enhances the test severity, particularly regarding the repetition rate of the fast transients, to better simulate real-world electrical environments.

Key Topics

  • Electrical Fast Transient/Burst Immunity: The standard defines test procedures that simulate rapid bursts of electrical noise and transients, which can stress and disrupt sensitive protective equipment in power systems.
  • Test Conditions and Severity Levels: Requirements specify the amplitude, duration, repetition rate, and test configuration needed for effective immunity testing.
  • Equipment Under Test (EUT): Focus on measuring relays, protection equipment, and associated control, monitoring, and process interface devices used in power system protection.
  • Operational Integrity: Emphasis on verifying that the equipment functions correctly and without degradation during and after exposure to fast transient bursts.
  • Enhancements from Previous Editions: Increased test severity, particularly in repetition rates, ensures up-to-date resilience against modern electrical noise environments.

Applications

IEC 60255-22-4 is essential for manufacturers, engineers, and testing laboratories involved in the design, production, and certification of electrical protection devices. Its applications include:

  • Power System Protection: Ensuring relay systems protect electrical networks reliably by withstanding fast transient disturbances.
  • Quality Assurance: Used during product development and manufacturing tests to verify immunity against transient electrical disturbances.
  • Compliance and Certification: Provides a recognized method for certification of protective relays and associated equipment ensuring compliance with international electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements.
  • Reliability Improvement: Helps utility companies and equipment providers improve the durability and reliability of protection devices, minimizing false trips or failures under transient conditions.
  • Control and Monitoring Systems: Validates that auxiliary equipment integral to power systems controls remains unaffected during transient bursts.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60255 Series: Covers a wide range of tests and specifications for measuring relays and protection equipment.
  • IEC 61000-4-4: Immunity test standards for electrical fast transient/burst which form the technical basis of IEC 60255-22-4.
  • IEC 60255-22-1 to IEC 60255-22-3: Other parts covering electrical disturbance immunity such as radiated, conducted, and surge immunity tests.
  • IEC 61000 Series: General electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards that guide immunity testing across electrical and electronic equipment.

By adhering to IEC 60255-22-4, stakeholders in the electrical protection industry ensure their equipment is rigorously tested against fast transient disturbances, ultimately supporting greater power system stability, safety, and regulatory compliance.
